Always tough getting kids up and ready after a long weekend.  Since their weekend started Thursday, doubly so.

Did something happen yesterday? I tried to get in before my day went insane, and I think I got in once--and then promptly lost my ability to get in.

Kosh was doing some updates and bug fixes, so there may have been some hiccups.

Ah, that would explain it. Apparently I hit things at just the wrong time. Good to know.

Good morning to the day shift.  I was able to register last night (see the Pub Thread if you're interested) and just wanted to say hello to you folks too.  Looking forward to making new friends.

One of those days -- having a hard time doing things.  I've been pecking away at job letters (two of them) but that is an anxiety-ridden exercise.  I've applied for hundreds of jobs over the years and gotten very, very few interviews.   It's always a crap shoot, and although I'd be admirably suited for either job, I wonder if there is any hope that they'll even take the time to look.

I've got work to do on my book, but I'm sort of burned out at the moment -- you can only stare at this stuff for so long without starting to go stir crazy.

Had the kids more than usual over the past week and a half, which meant endless distractions.  I had all four of them more or less continuously since last Saturday.  I love my kids, but in this tiny house with everyone piled on top of one another, it's too much.

Other than that, feeling anxious and depressed and without much of a purpose.

There is some "fun" stuff I could be doing, but I feel guilty doing it (not because it's unethical or immoral, just because it's not "work").  That voice in my head keeps saying "you don't deserve fun."

Top it off with I'm running out of necessities and it will be Friday before I can buy groceries.

A belated "welcome", Alice.  Are you a poster formerly known by another name at a previous blog, by any chance?

So, other than that...

/btw, why can't you buy groceries until Friday?

It was a bit hard for me to adjust to being back at work after a total of five days away... Thursday out sick, Friday a planned day off (but brought Little OR to the office for about an hour so he could run around and have everyone fall in love with him), plus the long weekend.   I still have a nagging cough which is semi-bothersome at bedtime, so I'm dragging it a bit today.  LOTS to do at work; fortunately, my Number One Minion, who I for some reason believed was still on vacation all this week, is actually back, so there's a bunch I can dump on him...

No money, and I don't want to put any more on the credit cards unless absolutely necessary.

I'd think groceries qualify as necessary, but of course, there are gradations of that.

Thanks for the welcome.  I've been following the blog(s) since 9/11, but had never registered to comment at any of them.  Like I said last night, I feel like I know you all already.  I was so grateful to have found LGF (yeah, stop laughing).  If I would have only had the MSM to listen to, I probably would be a liberal today (shudder).  I guess I never registered anywhere because I needed to learn more than to speak.

Yeah, I found out yesterday the lift in the van needs work and it is going to cost more than $1000. Ouch.

Reply to lucius septimius in 7:   If it's not immoral or unethical, you've got nothing to feel guilty about.  Seems we're supposed to have a right to the pursuit of happiness or did they take that away from us?  Not trying to sound preachy, but you deserve fun in your life; otherwise what's the point of living.  Some chances we never get again, don't let them get away.  How come I feel like the little devil sitting on your left shoulder?

Reply to vxbush in 16:   Thank you also for the welcome.  I'll try to hold up my end of the conversations, but you folks are way more educated and occupationally more advanced than I am.  Just correct me when I'm mistaken about something, I can take constructive criticism.

There's nothing wrong with taking a break and doing something you enjoy. Everyone needs relaxation and restoration, and it doesn't have to cost money. Play the piano, make art, take a long walk, read a book for pleasure. When you come back to your work, you'll feel refreshed and do better work than if you let yourself get burned out.

We aren't at all snobbish about education or careers here. The only thing that matters is if you can make a good case for your opinion and back it up with facts. We also enjoy poking fun at public figures, drawing historical comparisons, analyzing books and films, talking about food, telling kids to get off our lawn, and making fish puns just for the halibut.

Reply to PaladinPhil in 22:   Thanks for the kind words and welcome.  Don't kid yourself, baking is an art!  I got straight A's in Home Economics (what a joke-they taught us girls sewing & cooking) and I'm a terrible cook.  I understand the theory, it's the actual hands-on thing that throws me.  We could call and invite my in-laws an hour before dinner and she'd show up with a home-made pie.  I was in awe of her.  I usually got assigned to make the coffee at family gatherings. They'd all go on and on about how good the coffee was.  Good thing I can laugh at myself; their intentions were good and I appreciated that.

My high school required guys to take a semester of Home Ec and the gals to take one of shop. (My mother made a friend for life-not- at our wedding reception. She told my brand new mother-in-law that "At least Bob can cook!")(My wife is a great cook and baker. This did NOT go over well.)

Reply to revobob in 28:   Yeah, I had a semester of "Shop".  I made a box.  Ironically, I grew up to be a "Helper Monkey" for my husband, who is very talented in home maintenance and furniture building.  While I'm a good assistant, he still always take the smart end of the tape measure.  He must have seen my box...  People used to tell him he was lucky he liked to cook.  He would tell them it's not so much that he liked to cook as it was he liked to eat!

Reply to Alice in Dairyland in 29:  And since those classes have been dropped we have people who don't know what a Tablespoon or measuring cup is, and who can't hang a picture or drive a nail or sew on a button if held at gunpoint. Nobody expected our classes to produce Cordon Bleu chefs or Bob The Builder craftsmen, but a certain minimal exposure was certainly useful.

My oldest son earned extra money on date nights in the dorm- he was the only one who knew how to press a shirt or pair of slacks.

Which reminds me -- I really need to get a decent ironing board.  My ex threw out mine and replaced it with this stupid thing that attaches to the pantry door.  I hate it.
