Well… they are.  And so am I, and so are you.

You pay fifteen bucks, what do you get?
An entitled employee that won't work up a sweat.
It's deep into bankruptcy that I have gone
Because the government favors Amazon....

Greetings. I'm celebrating Labor Day by painting my kitchen. Naturally it's taken 3 trips to Lowe's and much more time than I anticipated.

Do you have the Lowe's down blues?

I just started taking the MIT Open Learning (free, web-based) course 6.036, Introduction to  Machine Learning, and the first lecture said how 20 years ago, they tried to write  software to recognize faces, and failed, until they wrote programs to take in images of faces and not faces, and learn how to recognize faces.

BTW,  the course is, as you'd expect from MIT, very theoretical, and I had to review some topics I haven't used in years to get through the self-assessment to see if I had the background for the course. Prerequisites are linear algebra, calculus (multivariable calculus - partial derivatives, divergence), Python programming.

Still way at the beginning; I only started this weekend.

Closer to 40 years ago, when I was a high school hacker who hung around MIT AI lab, I had thought this was the only approach that would work; it would just be impossible to write rules for all possible cases. I did not have an idea how to go about it, which is why I'm not an AI researcher, but that explains why I am interested in the subject.

Greetings from a crowded Metro North Harlem Line train, inbound to NYC.  Hudson Line is still suspended due to storm damage; so lots of returning Gothamites on this train.  We did get seats, though.

You could design a special AI for recognizing Latino faces, and call it “AI Caramba!”.

Any bugs in it would be cucarachas.

I love how, when Mars asks archy the cockroach to describe himself, he says, "I'm brunette, stand over six feet, and go everywhere."

See y'all Wednesday evening, or thereafter.  Happy New Year, and the best of everything, to all!

Happy Labor Day and New Year to all!  Back from camping.  Quite a different kind of trip this time.  Met our son and daughter-in-law at campsite and spent the week/weekend with them.  First night they were there someone comes into our site screaming for help.  A woman next to them just fell over and stopped breathing.  Daughter-in-law is an EMT and took off running.  She felt so bad she didn't have her bag with her, but managed to keep her breathing until an ambulance arrived.  They arranged for a helicopter to meet the and transport her from the closest local hospital.  D-I-L said it didn't look too good for the woman.  The worst part is we'll never know how the story ended.  I'm going to think everything turned out okay and she'll be out camping again in no time flat.
