Someone going by the name '"admin" with a Ukrainian address showed up last night. (I changed the name this morning)

Not sure what the data in the last post (now hidden) was. Didn't properly display.

Well, that’s sketchy, to say the least.

Thanks again for your time and effort running (and defending) this blog.

Had a summer job that year at Argonne National Lab, which is run by University of Chicago, which co-sponsored the exhibit at the Fields Museum, which let me borrow a member pass. No waiting. Nice exhibit but too crowded.

Yum!  Send some here, please.

In other news: Not content with merely sealing people in their homes, ChiComs are now building cages around buildings in Shangai.

Meanwhile, panic-buying in Beijing, as Covid cases confirmed there and residents fear a Shanghai-style lockdown

All this over something that has mutated into (mostly) a slightly-annoying cold.

Meanwhile, here in DC, here's an NPR interview yesterday with our illustrious mayor, Muriel Bowser, about all that "gun violence" that's been mysteriously plaguing the city:

https://www.npr.org/2022/04...

Now, follow along, class:

"Its aim [referring to the "Building Blocks" program funded by good ol' Uncle Sugar] is to identify the people and places that are contributing to the most violence. What we know is that there are about 450 blocks in D.C. where over 80% of the violence happens. So really focusing environmentally on those places is important and - in terms of all of our law enforcement efforts. The people who are contributing to the most gun violence are also a relatively small number of people. We have identified about 200 people right now.."

Okay! You've identified about 200 people who are committing most of the "gun violence". So, what are you going to do, Muriel?

"... that we believe that, with intent services, if we can get them on a more productive path, that we will improve safety not just for them but their families and associates, thereby making the community safer."

Um.

What?!

If you've identified these 200 violent criminals, how about you... just spitballin' here... arrest them, and prosecute them. Is that too much to ask?

Because that assumes that people are responsible for their actions, and we simply can't have that.

Right?  It's the nasty guns that make those 200 gentle giants trying to get their lives on track from not killing people. Now if only the guns would behave!

Thank heavens they’ve got the problem narrowed down, to a mere 450 blocks!

450 square blocks, about a square mile give or take.

1.4% of the area of D.C., suddenly the problem looks more tractable especially if the area is contiguous.

You know, there is a part of me that wants to think of this like CHAZ--just set up a huge fence around the blocks in question, and let them have their own security. The rest of the city has little to nothing to do, then. I know that isn't ethical--there will be a lot of people stuck in there that are not the cause of all the problems--but there is a part of me that sees a certain elegance to that solution.

Someone some years ago---I forget whether was during the late-Giuliani or early-Bloomberg years---said something about how a few thousand people, concentrated in some five neighborhoods, were responsible for 95% of the violent crime in New York.

The Pareto Principle is always in effect. A small percent of "issues" cause the majority "problems".

The politicians refuse to use analytics like this to identify the most pressing problems. Furthermore they are vested in not solving problems but perpetuating them so they accrue more money and power to the have a process to manage.

BTW, in some email feed the other day someone was hand-wringing about the current upsurge in drug use/addiction.  The article was accompanied by a photo of a heap of syringes that had been recovered/collected at a homeless-encampment site.  Of course, last I looked most urban jurisdictions were distributing free needles like candy mints, and the demented Bill DeBlasio, during his closing weeks as Mayor, was actually instituting "safe-shoot-up" sites around the city.

And then once they get around to talking about who those people actually are, the whole thing becomes very politically-incorrect-uncomfortable, and so the conversation is dropped, and they turn back to babbling about "gun violence", i.e., voodoo thinking (inanimate objects that are evil).

As long as we have "Drag Queen Story Time" with men dressed up as as completely over the top stereotypes of women, why can't we have "Minstrel Story Time" with people not of color dressed up as over the top stereotypes of minorities.  We don't have to limit it to black - they could do Mexicans, Asians, Indians, etc.

I mean, what would be the difference?

We can combine the two with this number:  I'd Rather Be Spanish.

For bonus points, note that the closing "Voila!" on this record is the entire basis for the "French Mistake" gay-chorus-line number towards the end of "Blazing Saddles," in that the "Voila!" is a French conclusion to a song about being Spanish.
