From an ad/link in this paper (Boston Broadside)

"LessLethal protection"

Good for those who live in states heavy on gun control/

Any thoughts from those more knowledgeable? Sure, a gun is better, but if you are going to get arrested for one, this might be reasonable.

Hunter Biden "surprised" Federal prosecutors by offering guilty plea

Gosh, I wonder what incentive he might have for getting a verdict in during, ohhh, say, these next 4 months or so?  Hmm..

Wow. When I saw the story yesterday, he was trying to do something called an Alford plea, which I had never heard about. Apparently that failed and he decided the evidence was too overwhelming to fight--or, as you suggest, he wanted to get this resolved now and get a slap on the wrist before someone got in who might actually hold him accountable for his behavior.

$100 Billion AI Company Says It Must STEAL to Make Money

The key issue:

OpenAI is begging the British Parliament to allow it to use copyrighted works because it's supposedly "impossible" for the company to train its artificial intelligence models — and continue growing its multi-billion-dollar business — without them.

As The Telegraph reports, the AI firm said in a filing submitted to a House of Lords subcommittee that using only content from the public domain would be insufficient to train the kind of large language models (LLMs) it's building, suggesting that the company must therefore be allowed to use copyrighted material.

Open-source works are all so old, don't you see? They don't catch the nuance of current writing and speech, and so we have to use the latest/greatest copyrighted works for free.

Other AIs are simply grabbing everything off the internet, which is resulting in some ugly results. By using copyrighted works, OpenAI wants to generate good content but not have to pay for prepping its engines using said materials.

I'm really curious what it would cost on Amazon to have the greatest works downloaded as Kindle E-pubs or PDFs. Surely they could spare a few million on that.

The Biden administration is filled with people who lie with impunity and think nothing of it. Case in point: US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack was asked about joint research being conducted by the USDA with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The cost? At least $1 million. The Subject? Bird flu gain-of-function studies.

This was during a congressional hearing in March, and Vilsack said it wasn't a collaboration....until FOIA requests made it very clear that it was. And it also includes working with the UK.

I really don't understand why our government gives money to China to develop these things. It makes absolutely no sense unless the two (well, three) countries have some common goal. But what? And why would you trust China? The only answer that makes any sense is to create pathogens, which seems like a really dumb idea.

Q: Should the father of the alleged shooter in the Georgia school shooting have been arrested for giving his 14-year-old son a gun for Christmas that was used in the attack last Friday?

If the son had been under 10, I would probably have said that was appropriate. But 14 seems like the age when the son should have been responsible for his own behavior. The idea of arresting the father seems wrong to me as a result.

Democrat goal: Register 9 million Americans that live overseas so they can vote while abroad

Problem: A federal report from 2022 notes that it estimates only 2.8 million Americans who live abroad are eligible to vote. Even if we're generous and assume the number is slightly larger after two years--say, 3.2 million--it surely seems like the Democrats are trying to find more ways to sneak in ballots for their party. This seems even more likely given that the DNC memo claims "over 1.6 million Americans from the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin" live overseas.

Right. Only the Americans in battleground states matter, whether they are dead, alive, overseas, or illegal.

The Gateway Pundit article points out some other issues with the math and this little tidbit: "The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) allows online voter registrations without verification of identity or citizenship status."

Well, isn't that convenient!

Well, I'm thinking more, he wants to get this resolved now so that Daddy can pardon him.  Similar idea.  (And yes, Biden has "promised" not to do that, but does anyone seriously believe Biden would do something as honorable as keep a vow?)

And charging him with second-degree murder is just insane.

That charge implies the father intended for the attack to occur.

Do psychologists have any idea about how these drugs interact???

Somehow, this doesn't seem that farfetched with Harris. The video is from her 2020 campaign for president, but she seems like the person who would be willing to sign it now.

The are out of really new ideas, or features. CPUs, GPUs, memories are at a physical limit in production. I/O busses are limited. There are improved ways to have some gains with the motherboards but those are very expensive process, you can get them in workstation and gaming machines.

So they go for eye candy. Cool stuff that looks neat but introduces more failure points.

Just had this discussion with Siemens folks. They are rolling out a major update to the tools we use. They showed us looks of cool eye candy. But we we drilled down on functionality, useability, stability, fault tolerance, and real improvements to performance, not so much.
