In adjusting my tin foil hat this morning, I had to ask: do we know if Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, had any clear political history. So I did a quick Google search, knowing that it would be skewed.

Oh, boy, was it. Every single article on the first page was a glowing review of Fauci from all the major media heads, how he is the voice of reason, he should be listened to over Trump, you name it. I think I might have my answer.

Fauci was, IIRC, quite the voice of reason back during the worst of the AIDS epidemic, and as such was roundly, regularly, and routinely excoriated by the gay-rights movement as an enemy.

Tom Cotton has joined Romney in talking about Yanging the economy with monthly payments to low and middle income people for the duration of the WuFlu crisis.

While I could use the money, I worry that once this kind of thing starts, there would be no way to stop it without opioid addiction level withdrawal pain and anguish.

See Syrah's #4. This may account for all the glowing reviews.

There is a line forming outside of the Costco here on the far side of the Puget Sound.

they are setting up something that looks like they might be limiting the number of people they will allow inside at anyone time.

the store opens in a hour. I see 44 people waiting in line.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

A song for the occasion.

I drink alone, yeah,
With nobody else
I drink alone, yeah,
With nobody else
You know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself
Every morning just before breakfast,
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and good buddy Wiser,
That's all I ever need
'Cause I drink alone, yeah,
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself
The other night I laid sleeping,
And I woke from a terrible dream
So I caught up my pal Jack Daniel's,
And his partner Jimmy Beam
And we drank alone, yeah,
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself
The other day I got invited to a party,
But I stayed home instead
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker,
And his brothers Black and Red
And we drank alone, yeah,
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself
My whole family done give up on me,
And it makes me feel oh so bad
The only one who will hang out with me,
Is my dear old granddad
And we drink alone, yeah,
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself

This pre-print medical paper shows that a drug often used for malaria and SARS is effective on COVID-19. The research goes back to a CDC report from 2005. Drug companies need to start ramping up production of this drug and passing it out, as it can also be used as a preventative. That would help minimize panic. Of course, all the social distancing behaviors limit the number of people who need the drug.

Definitely feeling better today. Got a progressive press this past weekend and spent some time setting it up this afternoon. Done a few dry runs and just need a factory round and calipers to ensure that things are being assembled correctly. Had a small issue with the decapping die that I think is figured out for now.

Our Governor has just closed the bars (among other places) as of 5:00pm this evening in Wisconsin.  We have 72 confirmed cases, 1 recovery and no deaths as of yet.  All cases are in the southern part of the state with the exception of one.  That one is adjacent to Minneapolis MN.  Some bars are offering drive up service but I don't know how well that will work out.  They'll have to hire millions of police officers to arrest the people with single alcoholic beverages in their vehicles.  You can transport full, unopened cases but not opened ones.

Bars and restaurants in Mass. have been take-out only for a few days now.

And the response in Boston's North End, where most of the restaurants are Italian is that the ban is necessary

Article

“We get updates from Italy every day,” said Nick Varano, whose 89-year-old father has been in isolation in Calabria, Italy, for 17 days. The country has become increasingly shut down as cases of coronavirus spike. As of Monday, 24,747 had contracted the virus with 1,809 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

“If we follow instructions we may do a little better. We have zero deaths here right now. Let’s use common sense,” said Varano, who employs about 40 people at his three restaurants, Strega restaurant, Rina’s Pizzeria and Nico, all in the North End. Only Rina’s will stay open — Varano said “it’s not worth it” to open fine-dining restaurants for takeout.

Gasoline is down to $2.08/gal. in my area, some places as low as $1.75/gal.  It would be 0.38 cents cheaper, respectively, had Pritzker not placed that damn gasoline tax per gallon on us last July.

Just received this email.  In part:

With the continued developments of COVID-19, we have made the decision to adjust branch services to increase protection of our valued employees and customers.

To help limit the spread of the coronavirus, Heartland Bank is taking the following measures:
  • Our drive-up services will remain open during regular business hours. These hours can be found on our locations webpage and on our mobile app
  • Effective Wednesday, March 18, we will temporarily limit branch lobby services to by-appointment for essential needs such as safe deposit box access and debit card assistance. Local branch phone numbers can be found on our website and will be posted on the lobby doors.
  • The Customer Care Center will continue to be available 7 days a week at 888-897-2276.
  • Employee nonessential travel has been suspended and group training events have been postponed.
  • Recommended disinfecting and cleaning protocols have been in place at all of our facilities.

My health insurance contacted it's customers to tell them there would be no customers allowed in their office, but we could still stop by to pay our premiums.  Considering they're located in the middle of one of our "hot spots" and about 200 miles away from where I live, I think I'll just continue to mail them my check!

They criticize Trump for too much restriction (like on foreign travel) when they'd do more.

Note Spain has nationalized all private healtcare. I'm sure that's way up on their list.

(An aside - during WWI, the US took over the railroads. During WWII, we had learned it was better to let the railroad companies run their railroads.)
