Just got back from visiting my little boy at his moms, where he was grilling me about the periodic table. And yes, he literally does know more about it than I do right now. A lot more. We also calculated together, at his request, that planet earth, in terms of volume, is equivalent to roughly 40 quadrillion human teeth.

At the age of five?  You've got quite a bright one there.

Thank you. I mean, obviously I’m not saying there was not a calculator and the Internet involved; and obviously I’m not saying that he is freely working with numbers in the quadrillions. But he did understand the concept.

Nothing wrong with using tools.  My father used a slide rule constantly---that was the tool they used to build the first atomic piles, that he used to come up with his formula for tritium, that NASA used to send men to the moon.

It's a tool to aid thought.  That Little OR uses tools---the current tools---is a good thing, but the really important thing is that he's showing there's one heck of a brain behind those tools, and learning to use them.

Good for him; good for you.

It was my freshman year at college when calculators were just beginning to be used. I still have a few slide rules, and remember, to some extent, how to use them.

Spent some time chatting with the owls in my sweetgum tree.  Nice to know Athena is looking in on me.

I wish Barry McGuire didn't have that constipated-bowel-movement voice styling that I associate with Alex Jones.

I was like that when I was five.  People thought it was cute until I was about 8, then I became the target of every bully in the township, including members of my own family.  Good to see you're encouraging him and not stomping on him as a potential threat.

I often wonder how far I might have gone had I gotten support instead of abuse.  But that's all water under the bridge.  And I chose not to respond to being bullied by becoming a bully.  More and more I think that was a bad choice.

On the way back from Illinois we stopped at the old burying ground in Liberty TN.  It's not a place on anyone's destination list.  We tromped through the cemetery and I pointed out the graves of various branches of the family.  Behind the church, established in 1809, was a creek named for our family where my father and his relatives were baptized -- full immersion in running water. The boys were bored and cranky, but my daughter was deeply moved by standing on the ground that held her ancestors.   That it is breathtakingly beautiful country helped.

I have been trying to write a parody of that for years

Only wrote this:

I woke up in a Tardis doorway
A Time Lord knew my name
He said “You can go with me tonight
But you can never go home again”

I staggered into the control room
Where the Doc worked the controls
I remember a column moving up and down
And screechin’ tore my ears

Doctor who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really wanna know (Doctor Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
Tell me, who are you? (Doctor Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
'Cause I really wanna know (Doctor Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
