We hadn't gotten telemarketer calls in over a week!

Then we realized it was because the phone would ring once and that's it. The call could be connected if we picked up.

I disconnected the house wiring at the interface box (turns out just plugging a phone there disconnects it). Same problem.

Tech came out yesterday. He thought the problem was at the central office, which was correct. However, our town has an old central office, so he had to connect equipment to the line at our end.

Note the interface box had been partially pulled from the house years ago when a truck hit the phone wire. Verizon has had to fix problems due to that, but never fixed the interface box, which was loose, so insects got into it. A mess.

This tech said "I can't work with it like this" and replaced the box. GOOD. He also noticed that we have an alarm system (it connects on the telco side of the interface - I didn't know that), so we had some troubleshooting to do. Took 2 1/2 hours for all the repairs, and another few minutes later because he could only do a temporary patch in the central office - the CO guy does the permanent fix.

But now it was done, and while I ended up working late due to the 2 1/2 hour break (no phone, no DSL, no VPN, can't work), I'm glad it was done RIGHT and gave him a good review on the Verizon survey call.

And he did have work as the box was not wired the correct way, with the main phone line in the wrong place. (We have 2 - house phone and wife's business phone)

I take care of the inside wiring, with a $25 test set from Amazon (barely puts out a test tone at the far end, but works well enough)

He has a TDR - he could tell how long the wires to the alarm were.

Interesting stuff. I partly wondered if the line was tapped to see if I'd discuss sensitive national defense matters over the phone, but no, I don't

Looks like you're here all by yourself tonight.  I've been busy packing for another week's camping trip.  Hopefully, when we get back the country will have returned to normal.  I can dream can't I?  I'm seeing US Appeals Court Judge Amy Coney Barrett's name out there as RBG's replacement.  I think I read she's 48 years old, has seven children and is Catholic.  That ought to make some heads explode.  Don't know anything else about her.  I guess I won't know anything more until we get back.  Things can only get better at this point, right?

As a singer, Leonard Cohen is one of these cases of a singer who does not really have a good voice, but has a very *interesting* voice.

Barbara Lagoa, a Latina, is also being considered for nomination

That would make Dem heads spin so fast they could supply green (envy) energy

What, lots of sounds of rocket powered roller skates exploding, stuff like that?

Wandering around the blogosphere, I keep seeing suggestions that I’m supposed to “mourn“ Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

I find this odd.

I didn’t know her; nor did I have some sort of great emotional involvement with her as a person.

i’m not saying that I should dance on her grave, but “mourn“ seems a little overdone.

Precisely.  And dive-bomber noises when he falls off cliffs.

I will know we have a coyote problem when I find Acme purchases on my credit card and rocket sled boxes in the yard.

i’ve seen plenty of coyotes, including right here on the streets of Washington, DC, but I’ve never heard them. In contrast, my sister, who lives in suburban Westchester county, New York, has told me about hearing absolutely horrific screams of animals from the woods near her house at night being hunted by coyotes.
