I always thought the worst thing about owning a bar would be having to keep all that stuff dusted.  Well, that and the drunks!

I did a thorough house cleaning today, can you tell?

I can just feel the cleanliness from here! When can you start on my house?/ (These two black labs with their fur and wet paws, now there is a constant cleaning job even though they only get to come it at night)

You can tell a good bartender from a bad one, the good ones are constantly cleaning between serving drinks and the bad ones just sort of stand around waiting for the next drink order.

Dogs!  Either your kitchen floor is spotless with absolutely no crumbs or food bits on it or it is tracked full of a mixture of sand and fur.  Our cats seems to smudge the windows up almost as badly as the dogs did though.  Miss having the companionship of a dog, but cats work out better for us at this stage in life.  We've had dogs (Labs) for over twenty-five years.  I've always had a cat in my life, can't imagine being without one.

And the really bad ones stand around talking to their friends and not taking your next drink order!

lol, how true! I’ve had a few of those, and they don’t get tipped either.

Have a very strange phone problem on both lines to the house (home and wife's business number)

If someone calls in, it works fine.

If we dial out, we hear nothing. No ringback (the tones indicating the other end is ringing) and no sound, but the other end hears us just fine.

Verizon is having trouble figuring this out. They think it has to do with the routing to the canned numbers. Well, it doesn't work for 1-800-verizon, my cell phone, or my wife's colleague, among others.

Wow, twenty five years ... you are a fellow lab lover!  They are definitely more work than cats are. We’ve had a few cats over time, as pets for our children. We were pretty insistent that they be outdoor cats though, seemed to be constantly dealing with flea issues when we allowed them in. It’s been many years now since I’ve had a cat, no big desire to get one.

Better be careful what you say behind their back then!

I would love to have a dog, but as you say, it doesn't fit in my life right now. I grew up with a poodle and as an adult I had a border collie mix who was the best. I've also had cats all my life. The current lords of the manor are Kip and Henry, solid black littermates.

Those are combined years, none of the dogs lived that long.  My son has had three Labs.  He takes in rescues.  The first one he got lived to be sixteen and passed about two years ago.  The other two had health issues.  One only lived to about five years, but the other lived to about ten years.  While all three were outstanding dogs, the first one made the deepest connection with us.  Not only being the first dog, but living sixteen years.  Seems like he was in our lives since forever.

Went shopping. Plenty of toilet paper and tissues. No paper towels.

Rather than leave the paper towel racks empty, they filled them with toilet paper.

Aren't those the two guys on that old sitcom?  Tom Hanks played one of them.  Had to dress up as women for some reason.  Dogs are like having children, they have a lot of needs.  Cats are more like roommates, they pretty much take care of themselves.  Not counting food & litterboxes.

I grew up with a poodle, those dogs are smart! My father taught Cherie so many tricks. He had to de-train her from retrieving the newspaper once she started to fetch all the neighbors papers as well and bring them back to him.

The 16 year old sounds like my Luke, aka Boo-Boo, who also lived that long. I really bonded with that lab, miss him to this day. He’s been gone a little over a year now.

Reply to turn in 17: Our first dog was a Lab mix.  Some kind of herding dog was mixed in there.  Was family fun trying to cross-country ski with him.  He'd absolutely panic if one of us got too far ahead of the group or God forbid, someone lagged behind.  He's literally nip at your heels to get you back in the pack.  He was also the one who could smile.  If you made a big smile at him, he would give you a big smile back.  He could do it on command too.  He's been gone a long time and I still miss him dearly.

We have poodles because my wife is allergic to most dogs.

One toy poodle lived to be 18, a tiny poodle 16.

But one standard poodle had congenital kidney problems and didn't make it to 4. His sister went to our daughter, because we still had a toy poodle she didn't like. She and her brother used to spend a lot of time outside running around (invisible fence kept them safe)

Well, I suppose you could substitute paper towels for toilet paper, but I don't think toilet paper would work very good as toweling.

This one figured out how to open the gate herself. And if the lever is up, she looks at it and knows it will swing open

First dog needed no fence.  He just stopped at the property line.  Never left the curb even as son was getting off the school bus,  Just stayed right there doing the happy dance until son got to him.  The last dog no fence could keep in.  As long as you had eyes on him, he was okay.  Look away for the second and he was gone.  That's how we got him in the first place, he ran away from his first home.

Yes! It was called Bosom Buddies and the other actor was Peter Scolari. Good memory!

They are pretty affectionate, especially when I'm busy, but mostly self-sufficient. It's nice having other living creatures in the house when you live alone.

Some days when my husband is gone, I find myself having long conversations with the cat.  Oh, who am I kidding; even when he's home, I talk to the cat.  What can I say, she's a good listener and she meows back like she knows what I'm talking about.

Reply to turn in 26: I remember the first time I say him smile.  My husband was at home, flat on him back for many months with two herniated disks.  I was gone all day at work and the son was in school all day, so he was totally alone.  I came home one night after work and he tells me the dog can smile.  I thought, oh no, he's finally cracking up.  No, no, says, just go back outside and come in again.  Wait until the dog comes to greet you and smile real big at him.  So okay, I humor him.  Sure thing, I smile bigly at the dog and the dog wiggles and smiles right back at me.  I don't know if I was happier the dog could smile or relieved my husband hadn't gone insane.

In Dilbert, the cat, Catbert, is HR because she looks cute and harmless but doesn't care whether you live or die.

And with that, I will help my blood pressure by petting a dog and going to bed.
