Per LAPD Headquarters:

There’s been an LAPD Officer-Involved Shooting on the 91 freeway near Raymond in the City of Fullerton, at the termination of a pursuit of an individual suspected to be responsible for multiple shootings. A Public Information Officer is responding & we will provide more details.

Read the whole thread.

Well, I am feeling a bit better for a few drinks, but I have to go and get the trash out, too.

Already had to get a mouse bagged.

Did you use your Mousebag long gun?

Did you trap it or did one of the dogs bring it in?

Trapped in the house. We use these pet safe traps, which don't always work, but this one got its mouse.

Dogs chase chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits. But they stop at the end of the invisible fence area so the critters get away.

Last year, a rabbit was chowing down really near the fence, with the dogs barking at it. Kept eating. I think it could smell the dogs don't go there.

Well, I revived a 4 year old computer with a new disk drive and Linux. Runs quite well. I think the old drive failed. It was a hybrid drive, with an SSD component plus rotating disk, and SSDs only last 4 years or so.

Previous Linux system was an antique from a former employer, but even Linux doesn't run well on 4 GB any more. (Typically over 90% memory used. New one has 16 GB) Plus, its graphics hardware was too old, so a lot of games wouldn't run.

And since most of my work is on Linux, it helps to have something where I can try out new C++ features

Buzz, I am curious as to your take on this, since I’ll be in New York City this next week for the first time since the pandemic began. Is it really this bad?

Part of me replies, "I don't know---because I've been in Manhattan so seldom in the last several months that I can't really say."

Part of me says, "I've no doubt it must be---for when I drove from Brooklyn to the Holland Tunnel on Canal Street back in November, the street, normally choked with traffic, was an empty gulch, and the stores which lined it largely boarded up."

Every bar and restaurant in my Brooklyn neighborhood has built some kind of hutch for "outdoor indoor dining," or whatever they call it; I've not been out to a restaurant for a meal in over a year.  Wherever I've been in the city it is like looking at the city that used to be through a funhouse mirror.

There are some few people in my wokie neighborhood who are less fanatic about masks than they used to be, but there are also a lot more empty storefronts and a plethora of those stupid "outdoor/indoor" dining facilities.

I'm trying to figure out where the hell to move to.

Florida is looking a lot better than it used to, if you have complete freedom of movement.

You could join millions of your former neighbors in Florida.

I went to law school in Florida, and hated every minute I was there.  On the other hand, my UofC roomie, who's from Florida, lives there now, and a friend of mine from law school has a pied a terre there.  The flying cockroaches, foot-long grasshoppers, and poisonous snakes don't really appeal to me---not to mention the humidity---but of course the taxes are a lot better.

Back when I was in school in Miami, there was not a single decent bookstore there.  I gather things have changed somewhat, and of course there's online buying now, but that was, to me, part of the evidence that I had left the civilized world.

The main thing I disliked about Florida was that you had to drive everywhere---not only a lack of decent public transportation, but the fact that you couldn't walk anywhere except in a few tiny enclaves like Coconut Grove or South Beach; most places didn't even have sidewalks.   It's not that I don't like to drive, but as I age I'm more conscious of the fact that a time will come when I won't be able to---and it seems foolish to move somewhere that driving is a necessity.

Good news!  They all ate each other, in the inverse of exactly that order; and then the poisonous snakes were eaten by the manatees.

Some parts of Florida are better than others. I'll never set foot in Orlando again. I love St. Augustine. I've been wanting to go back there for a long time.

Never been to St. Augustine.  Tampa/St. Pete, where I took the Florida bar exam, looked almost like human habitation.  I wouldn't go to Orlando on a bet, since an ex-girlfriend lives there with her baster-bastard, and I really don't want to see her ever again in this life.

Of course, the great thing about Florida is the opportunity to live in a gatored community.

I have never had an occasion to visit Florida but we lived in Port Royal, SC for nine months back in the early seventies.  I didn't notice the foot-long grasshoppers but we most definitely had the flying cockroaches, poisonous snakes and humidity.

St. Augustine, as you know, is the oldest city in North America, so it's got a lot of historic charm.

The south has mosquitos as well.  My husband and his USMC friends used to joke that the South Carolina state bird was a mosquito. LOL
