Still bothered by this covert COVID tracer app put on my phone without informing me. (Not just me - whole threads on it elsewhere - I think it was pushed to all Massachusetts Android phones; Apple phones notified the users about it)

Google says it won't do anything unless you opt in to notifications - but why would someone do that if they didn't even know the app was there? In which case, why put the app on the phone in the first place?

Why no app icon? The notification setting is hidden in Google Play settings.

It is supposed to keep identities secret, but let you know that you have been near a COVID carrier long enough to be concerned. The technology was developed around a year ago at MIT, but it took a while for Google and Apple to productize it.

Even so, it is useless unless people give it COVID status and allow notifications, which isn't likely if it is hidden.

Maybe once it is on enough phones, it will either turn on notifications without asking, or ask, as it isn't that useful until a certain percentage of people have the app.

Or maybe there is something else going on here.
