Work from home

Instructed to work from home for at least the next two weeks.

I'm set up for it already so I'm ready.

So Warren is not the nominee.

No, man, wounded knee

(OK, a stretch)

Lab sent out its covid-19 update. No unnecessary travel, especially foreign travel. Must report about foreign travel and have health services monitor.

I cannot work from home due to lab restrictions. If I have to, I'll have to get some other income. Would be bad.

(In the past, I have worked from home. One job, I mostly worked from home. The problem here is security.)

i’m guessing I’ll be doing the same within the next week or two. No definite information to that effect, just a guess.

Got a very nice compliment this evening.  Two of my students---one from the earlier class, one from the later---sat in on both the earlier and the later sessions.  Both of them said that it was because the class was "interesting," that I was a good teacher, and that they looked forward to the class every week.

How nice is that?

Sigh.  And I have to decide whether I go ahead with flying up to Cape Cod in about two weeks, to spend time with college buddies. I’d really like to do it. But...

It dawned on me today that I work for a division with "global" in the name. People in my building travel all over the world and we frequently host overseas employees. Nearly everyone in my group works from home 2 or 3 days a week, so we're set up for it. However, I haven't been there long enough to have that privilege. Tomorrow I'm going to email myself the instructions for logging into the system. I already have the RFID token, so it should be simple enough.

having met you, I am not the slightest bit surprised that your students report that. I imagine you would be an excellent teacher.

My subject matter is copyrights and contracts; my students are studying illustration.  They're not well versed in any of this---indeed, some of their prior teachers have told them some howling idiocies---and it is my job to try and teach them, in fifteen one-hour sessions spread out over as many weeks, enough of the basics to protect themselves via copyright registration, understanding contract-language basics, and some of the elements of negotiation.

In other words, trying to nail custard to the wall.

If I can keep them awake (these are evening classes), get them to understand in this short time some of what it took me nearly 40 years to learn, and make 'em laugh a little, I figure I'm doing OK.

Bloomberg blew $500 million on his ill-fated presidential bid.

He could have given every American $1 million and had money left over.

Ah, yeah. To put it mildly, I’m in the same position. For once in my life, I’m certainly not so happy to be working in a place that has that “international“ panache.

Hell, I got through high-school trigonometry by running "Casablanca" through my head.  Sines, cosines, etc. were always an unfathomable mystery.

You’ll have to explain to me how that worked.

For my part, I was always in the advanced math classes in school; but it was also always the subject I struggled the most with. Now, my 4 1/2-year-old son, on the other hand... good grief. He somehow got the math gene, and how.  It’s a little bit frightening.

I was terrible in arithmetic - barely passing.

Then, iirc 8th grade algebra - started getting A's.

Algebra, trig, calculus - fine.

Didn't get good at arithmetic until I had calculators to back me up - and then I started doing it myself first and using the calculator to check the results.

OK, I am wierd.

Well, having a father on the school board was a big help, as was having a math teacher who was young enough to be impressed by such things.

I still don't understand how the hell I passed the course, let alone doing so with a "gentleman's B."

Somebody cleaned out the local stores of sanitary wipes and hand sanitizer.

Also, there are testing people in my area for the virus.

get plain old isopropyl alcohol, repurpose any sort of atomizer bottle as a spray for it. You’re all set in terms of hand sanitizer.

I thought you were joking. I saw something similar on Twitter. That said, for a million dollars I'd probably vote for Bloomberg.
