My one and only personal contact with Venezuelans was during my first semester in lawschool. Our dorm was mostly undergrads, but the law students were initially paired together in the double-rooms, each of which shared a bathroom with the adjoining double-room. My roomie dropped out before the end of the first semester, as did one in the double-room with which we shared facilities---and each of us were then paired with a Venezuelan undergrad from some influx of them.

The Venezuelan in the other room would routinely throw his used bathroom tissues into the wastebasket in the bathroom, instead of flushing it with his eliminations. He could not be dissuaded from this practice, despite efforts to do so; apparently, he'd grown up in an area where water pressure was insufficient to handle excrement-coated tissue. My own Venezuelan got sore at me about something or other and threatened me; "You want to fight? I kill you! I kill two people in Venezuela!" I suggested to him that this was sufficient for him to be deported, and he quieted down at least long enough for me to be able to transfer to a single room in another dorm.

Charmers, the lot of them.

I had a quite different experience with Venezuelans. (1970's) Two brothers had the room across from us in the dorm. They put VENEZUELA in masking tape on their window, we, being science fiction geeks, put up TAU CETI IV (that would be the fourth planet orbiting the star Tau Ceti)

We got along find. And their sister, also at the same college, was quite hot.

Within minutes, Candace Owens reframed Venezuela’s liberation into an Israel centric conspiracy, declaring that “Zionists cheer every regime change” because they “steal land, oil and other resources.” It was a breathtaking pivot. A dictator falls, and somehow the villain is Israel. Not corruption. Not tyranny. Not the architects of a failed socialist experiment. Israel.

Not to be outdone, Cenk Uygur jumped on the same bandwagon, arguing that Donald Trump was “acting like Hillary Clinton at her neocon peak,” accusing the administration of “bombing all over the planet (Nigeria, Somalia, Venezuela)” and sneering, “Why do we have to fight all of Israel’s wars?” The message was unmistakable. If America confronts authoritarianism, Israel must be pulling the strings.
