I heard on Morning Sedition today that Washington, DC is looking at huge cuts in service for its Metro system, as to both trains and buses. They've apparently stumbled on the surprising news that when you don't let people go to work, go to shows, or eat in restaurants, they don't use public transportation as much---and the systems lose even more money than usual. Gosharootie, who'da thunkit? At the same time, there's quite a little irony here, in that the Left is constantly babbling about the wonders of public transportation and the need for more of it to get those evil cars off the road, to which end they do their best to make owning and operating an automobile as onerous as possible. But, as they force increasing reliance on public transportation with onerous parking restrictions, elimination of gas stations, and the like, they are simultaneously limiting the mobility that public transportation is supposed to afford. Such concern for "the working man" and "everyday people."

I wasted time last night while eating dinner watching about the latter 70% of the movie Red Tails. It really should be a good movie. I mean, it's a compelling story (Tuskegee Airmen), with great scenes of air-to-air combat (including P-51s vs. Me-262s, oh my!), and some recognized very good actors (Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding, Jr.). But... sheesh, the thing is just so badly written. Not to mention, they seem determined to cram every WWII movie stereotype into the thing. E.g., the brash young pilot, who's the best fighter jock in the group, but he's so darn hotheaded!... and just before the climactic mission, he proposes to his girl, and she says yes, and it's the happiest day of his life! And then... GUESS WHAT HAPPENS TO HIM DURING THE CLIMACTIC MISSION.
Did you say, "he dies heroically?" Dingdingdingding!
And more; he dies after he takes on an Me-262 head on (literally), saving his buddy in the process, and killing the 262... but in the course of the dogfight, he gets hit, is his torso, about 3 or 4 times. At first his buddies think he's okay, and they're congratulating him on the kill, and then he whispers into the radio something like, "yeah, but I think I got killed, too." And then he delivers a poignant valedictory speech, before his plane finally tumbles to earth.
I looked it up to confirm; yes, the Me-262 was armed with 30-freaking-millimeter cannons, firing explosive shells. Ummm, I don't think anyone would be in shape to deliver a speech after being hit in the torso with even one of those, let alone three or four.
On the other hand, the "Red Tails" really did, apparently, score three air to air kills against Me-262s during that very mission (their first over Berlin), which, given the 120-mph top speed difference between the two aircraft in question, is pretty damn impressive.

I know you're stunned, but hang on to your hat--a research project that couldn't get published has demonstrated that certain political positions correlate strongly with social justice theory. We asked these professors to report on their gender, political orientation, basic personality traits, and field of academic study. And just as Haidt's presentation suggested, several of these variables were strongly and significantly related to the values that one holds as an academic.
Our full report of these findings is found in our (now published) "unpublished manuscript," here.
Some highlights of the findings are as follows:- Relatively conservative professors valued academic rigor and knowledge advancement more than did relatively liberal professors.
- Relatively liberal professors valued social justice and student emotional well-being more so than did relatively conservative professors.
- Professors identifying as female also tended to place relative emphasis on social justice and emotional well-being (relative to professors who identified as male).
- Business professors placed relative emphasis on knowledge advancement and academic rigor while Education professors placed relative emphasis on social justice and student emotional well-being.
- Regardless of these other factors, relatively agreeable professors tend to place higher emphasis on social justice and emotional well-being of students.
