Happy Friday, everyone. Upgraded to Big Sur last night, so I'm officially in testing mode today. Local temps: 30ºF. Not too bad for December.

Faced with the problem of what to call an as-yet-unexplored body of water on the chart he was preparing, the old mapmaker dubbed it the Weshall Sea.

Good morning, friends!

OR, you might want to consider giving Little OR his telescope a few days early.

"Christmas Star" appears for the first time in 800 years

Another thing the little guy might like is online planetarium shows. Our local fernbank.edu has a new one every week. I'm sure the Air and Space Museum has even better offerings.

The other day I watched a not-very-good late-'30s film called "Stolen Holiday," starring Kay Francis and Claude Rains, which was loosely based on the Stavisky Affair.

Alexandre Stavisky was a highly-successful financial swindler who lived the high life in France in the early '30s, until his fraud empire crashed around him. He died, allegedly by suicide, under suspicious circumstances.

The film was interesting for two reasons; first, it joins the "Golddiggers of 1933" finale, "Remember My Forgotten Man," which is an allusion to the routing of the Bonus Marchers from Anacostia Flats, and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," which is an oblique reference to the destruction of the Pendergast Machine in Kansas City, as a "torn from the headlines" example of 1930s film.

Second, it was interesting because the Stavisky Affair recalls the recent downfall of another flamboyant and successful financial swindler, who died under suspicious suicide circumstances.

He had a brother, you know, who opened a restaurant featuring live music.  It was called Ivan Skavinsky's Ska Bar.

Wasn't that in competition with a bagel joint called Abdul's Big Bulbous Schmear?

I hear there is a really good biblical museum here in DC, that chronicles the journey of the assistant of Moses, step-by-step, during exodus: The Aaron's Pace Museum.

I'm waiting for all the background indexing to get done, but that's the only thing that's bugging me right now--it's just slower than I know it will be.

Afternoon one and all. Welcome back Spenser. Been a slow day in the keep. Day off and no ambition at all. Wife is down with a severe headache and called in sick. Bunch of other crap going on but that's enough for now.

Ah, but as soon as we bring out the tar and feathers, those will be outlawed, just as urine and feces have been outlawed in various cities preparing for leftist riots.

JCM, perhaps you’ve been worried that there just isn’t enough crime in Seattle. Relax! Your city government has got you covered:

Does anyone here have any QAnon friends?  Sorry if I've missed a lot of discussion about this.  I don't believe 90% of it, even the stuff I want to believe.  Also, they talk a lot about "global bankers" including the Rothschilds so that makes me nervous.

That's pretty much defacto in place Pot Pete Holmes the city "prosecutor" doesn't prosecute misdemeanors anyway, or 10 grams of heroin.

Well if I committed a misdemeanor Holmes would throw the book at me.

It's society's fault they are poor, drug addicted and homeless.

The other thing Holmes does is use charged crimes, vs. reported crimes with compiling crime stats.

Which artificially reduces the crime rates.

New design for the Space Needle - a giant hypodermic needle.

I wonder what the Seattle government will do when there is no one left who pays taxes?
