Monday, and it's supposed to snow and sleet with some ice accumulation today. I'm not looking forward to going out.

Overcast and drizzly here, but it's supposed to be 70 tomorrow.  They're saying Mom's is going to get 3-5 inches of snow tonight.

England got quite a bit of snow over the last few days. Contrary to what you might expect from various adaptations of A Christmas Carol, they don't get that much in the Midlands and the South. My daughter-in-law sent us videos of the four-year-old building a snowman and having a snowball fight with her dad. I hate that we live so far apart but it's so easy now to send pictures and videos.

This is good news. The question is, how will the Left attempt to halt and prevent Newsom's recall from occurring?

I have heard that. Having the ability to be live with family across the globe is absolutely amazing and a wonderful use of technology. I have a friend who used to virtually eat breakfast with her granddaughter every morning, and she said it just made every day better.

Now that Biden has been installed as President, CV19 is no longer as useful to the statist as it was prior to November third.

Spitballing the Newsom recall.

Newsom is Governor in a state where Democrats will vote for any Democrat over any Republican.

if the recall goes to a vote, I will predict that Newsom will win, though it will look close. The only thing that can hurt Newsom politically is if other Democrats decide to replace him for someone fresh. He is tied to Nancy Pelosi, which helps him as long as she holds power. If Nancy gets kicked out of the Democrat leadership, Newsom will look more vulnerable to aspiring Democrats that want his job.

Noting the connection to Pelosi is a good point.

It will be interesting to watch this develop. With Pelosi being 80, I have to wonder how much longer she will be able to fend off attacks against her and her position as speaker--and if she will find it easier to let Newsome fall so she can concentrate on DC politics. Maybe this is wishful thinking.

Old and busted the COVID scare!

New and shiny!

Highly contagious COVID-19 variant found in case in Pierce County

Yes but is it more virulent.

Contagious is how easily it spreads from person to person.

Virulent is how sick it makes people.

If this strain is more contagious but less virulent that is a GOOD thing, increase the spread people who've been exposed and therefore make the "herd" immune.

Precise language is important. But they've been manipulating the language around covid to increase the fear.

When I was a kid in Cambridge, we got something like an inch and a half---maybe two inches---of snow one day.  The panic was astounding; the town almost shut down, and people were out desperately sweeping the snow from their walks with brooms (nobody had a snow shovel, of course).

For two inches.  Coming from Chicago, we were laughing at them for the panic.

Well, not in California's eyes, with people allowed to be ballot collectors. Anyone else would see the possibilities of fraud, but in CA it's merely a feature.

i’ve mentioned this before: I recall listening to BBC news while driving to New York for Christmas around the mid to late two thousands. There was at the time of blizzard approaching the United Kingdom. They quoted the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown if I recall correctly, as confidently asserting that there were X number of snow plows on standby around the country; with X being a number in the low to mid hundreds, maybe 400 something.  I actually shouted at the radio, “for the whole *country*?!“.

I think in Buffalo, New York they have that number of snowplows on standby in May...

And for me, this is staycation week. No big plans, just some personal things to attend to, a couple of dinner dates, badgering police headquarters to see where the hell my overdue concealed carry permit is, and just trying to reduce the amount of clutter in my living space.

Atlanta loses its collective mind when it snows. We have snowplows and de-icing stuff, but not enough for a city of this size. It just doesn't make sense when it's only used every three or four years.

So my first official staycation-week activiity was to stay up late last night watching random television.  This included the interesting, if somewhat uneven movie Resistance (2020).    Did you know that Marcel Marceau had been active in his youth as a member of the French Resistance?  I had not.

And now I wonder; if Marceau had participated in direct assaults on German troops, would that have made him an... anti-personnel mime?

Discuss.

Perhaps now that they've trashed Democratic Party HQ in Portland, they've been upgraded to "white supremacist right-wing terrorist militia".

His big advantage was that if he'd been captured, the Germans couldn't have made him talk.

The "somewhat uneven"  bit includes one of my Hollywood pet peeves; they have the lead character, played by American actor Jesse Eisenberg. speaking in English throughout the movie, with an... accent.   What kind of accent?  Well, a foreign accent.   Not French; not Yiddish; just sort of... you know, foreign.   And that's to let the audience know, this guy is, you know, foreign.   (The Germans all speak German in the movie, by they way, except when they're speaking to French people, in which case they speak... English, of course.)

I consider this dumb, and condescending to the audience.  Either have all the actors speaking with their own natural voices and accents, with the shared willing suspension of disbelief with the audience,  "pretend they're speaking French"; OR, go all-in, and have the actors all speaking the native language of the people they're portraying, with subtitles as necessary (see, e.g, The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far)

I'm sure according to her (being a Hollywood person) all the violence was done by right wing militias or oppressed BIPOCs seeking justice in a world of systemic racism or some such.  She did bring out evil Kyle Rittenhouse shooting democrats. And right wing bomber in Nashville!  And right wing shooter in Vegas -- the only reason that hasn't been solved is because systemic racism white supremacism something something.

I was just briefly torturing myself by listening to NPR (which I've generally stopped doing) while driving back from the hardware store.  The NPR "News" segment on this story mentioned that the suit alleged that Trump received illegal emoluments by foreign dignitaries staying at his - and I quote - "gold-plated Washington hotel".   That's some totally non-partisan, objective journalism, right there.

Trump Administration Rewrote US Approach to China Threat

The administration recognized the vastness of the Chinese regime’s infiltration campaign that has left virtually no aspect of American society untouched, China experts say. Trump administration officials have described Beijing’s threats as an all-out assault against America’s economic prosperity, national security, and freedoms, as well as that of democracies around the globe.

It would be a horrible mistake for the Biden administration to start undoing Trump’s aggressive policy toward China, but we all know it’s going to happen. RTWT
