I had to get an allergy shot at the doctor's office this morning, and they were going to make me sit outside in my car for the 30 minutes I have to wait to see if I have a reaction. For someone who has chronic asthma that gets worse in the cold, this didn't seem like a good plan. I protested and they graciously let me stay inside. It's up to 9º F. now, at least.

Another one? A plane that crashed because the drivers were technical operators and not pilots?

Throttle malfunction may have caused Boeing jetliner crash in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A malfunctioning automatic throttle may have caused the pilots of a Sriwijaya Air jet to lose control, resulting in the Boeing 737-500's crash into the Java Sea last month, Indonesian investigators said Wednesday.

In a Boeing the pilots can easily override all the automatic systems. The entire auto pilot can be disconnected by a button on the control column, or a button on the brow of the instrument panel, it will also disconnect when the control column is move more than a certain amount or with certain force. Same with the throttles, manual throttle movement overrides the auto throttle.

So I just finished my first physical therapy session after yesterday‘s knee procedure, I’ve already got an additional 12 to 17 degrees of knee flexion, depending on how you want to measure, which I think is pretty good and the therapist seems happy.  Much less pain and swelling today than I had expected.

There are at least half dozen crashes that are at least partially, with the last chance to recover due to flight crews not being comfortable pilots. Where instead of turning off problematic systems and flying they tried to troubleshoot the fault instead of flying.

We learned that lesson. Eastern 401 in '72 the pilots were letting the plane fly and fiddling with a gear light, one of the pilots bumped the control column and disconnected the autopilot.

Non-western countries don't have the homegrown civil aviation sector we do where pilots learn to fly first then move up into more and more complex aircraft. They are hired without any experience to be pilots and trained to operate the aircraft. When the fit hits the shan, they only know to operate the systems not fly the damn thing.

And then ghosts started haunting other airplanes made out of the recycled parts from that flight.

I wonder what percentage of the US population today would get that reference.

I don't, but I flew in the 60's and 70's as a young child. I didn't have to deal with tickets.

Had a corporate meeting today.

A section was on how to combat "misinformation" on various platforms.

The discussion was on limiting "misinformation", without defining it, and it is a service to limit access to it.

The vast arrogance in that. That a person, or group can be the arbiters and gatekeepers of information, true or not. And that they, not the consumer are only capable of making that determination.

This is the new definition of "literacy" in our day--to make sure you are only accessing approved sources.

My mom kept her ration book. She learned to drive because her mother couldn't and they were preparing in case my grandfather was called up. (He never was, as he was nearly 40.) I remember seeing it - it's probably still in her cedar chest at the house.

We aren't the only ones calling the storming of the Capitol by loonies the Democrat's Reichstag Fire - link

Democrats keep claiming that the First Amendment doesn’t permit “shouting fire in a crowded theater”, even while they’re shouting, “Reichstag fire” in the crowded theater of government.
