Some engineers are proposing an excellent solution for "carbon-free" energy. But I doubt the climate change people will like it, even if it reduces the need for power lines. Jacopo Buongiorno and others say factory-built microreactors trucked to usage sites could be a safe, efficient option for decarbonizing electricity systems. This nuclear battery concept is really a different thing because of the physical scale of these machines — about 10 megawatts. It’s so small that the whole power plant is actually built in a factory and fits within a standard container. The idea is to fit the whole power plant, which comprises a microreactor and a turbine that converts the heat to electricity, into the container.
It’s exceptionally robust — that’s one of the selling points. First of all, the fact that it’s small is good for a variety of reasons. For one thing, the overall amount of heat that’s generated is proportional to the power, which is small. But more importantly, it has a high surface-to-volume ratio because, again, it’s small, which makes it a lot easier to keep cool under all circumstances. It’s passively cooled, to a point where nobody has to do anything. You don’t even need to open a valve or anything. The system takes care of itself.

If anyone has some experience with/information regarding physical and mental anxiety, and how to deal with it, I'd appreciate it if they shared. I've been having bouts of mental anxiety---suddenly the mind is racing but not able to actually think about anything---which are often accompanied by a feeling of shortness of breath. If this sounds like anything anyone is familiar with, please let me know.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 4: I've experienced it, but I don't know if my solution works for anyone else. When that happens to me, it is usually when I delayed eating, and then ate a lot - somehow the change in blood sugar triggers it. Just recognizing that can let me ignore the effects to some extent until they go away. Like I said, this might not work for anyone else.

Then there is this strange story out of a town near Boston. Three shot dead (including perpetrator) after truck crashes into building A man rampaged through Winthrop, smashing a stolen tractor-trailer through another vehicle and a building and then gunning down two bystanders before cops shot him to death, according to authorities. Police didn’t reveal the name of the dead perpetrator, who they say injured two and shot two more to death in a sleepy Winthrop neighborhood starting at 2:43 p.m. Saturday. The man had stolen a semi-tractor-trailer truck from a plumbing company and was driving it through Winthrop when he crashed into a silver SUV, dragging it across the pavement so hard it left a divot and then throwing it into the air. The two people inside were taken to the hospital and are expected to live. Then, a stone’s throw away, the truck pounded through an empty low-slung building, completely demolishing the squat brick business before coming to a rest in it at the corner of Shirley Road and Cross Street. But the man crawled out of the wreckage — and took out a gun, Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty told the assembled crowd of reporters several hours later. The man, armed with two weapons, shot first a woman and then a man — both innocent bystanders — to death, Delehanty said. Police officers arriving at the scene then engaged the man, and, “They ended the threat,” Delehanty said. They shot the man to death. The cops wouldn’t speculate on the motivations of the man, or much else regarding the strange and tragic incident, which remains under investigation by Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins’ office.

The shooter was identified as Nathan Allen, 28, who Suffolk DA Rachael Rollins said police have connected to “some troubling white supremacist rhetoric.” Also killed by Allen was 60-year-old Air Force Staff Sgt. Ramona Cooper, Rollins said. As part of the investigation into Allen, Rollins said police have found “anti Semitic rhetoric written in his own hand.” The Suffolk DA noted that Allen passed by others who were not Black and are still alive during Saturday’s rampage.
