I don't have much to say either other than everything's going to hell in Afghanistan and Haiti had a nearby 7.2 earthquake that has caused buildings to collapse.

I've been busy in my garden. I cleared everything from one end, where the tomatoes and zucchini used to be. I composted and fertilized the entire bed, and in the clear area I planted broccoli, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach, Swiss chard, radishes, and pak choi. When the cucumber and squash are done, I'll plant lettuce. I hate the heat (it's 92 degrees today), but I like having a long growing season.

Wow, that's a nice assortment of vegies.  Good for you!

Unpredictable consequences from the Afghan crisis

Actually, some consequences are quite predictable.

Thanks! I've been really enjoying it. My summer veggies didn't do all that well - I crowded too many plants in a 4x8 foot bed, and bugs got to some of them. It gets me outdoors and provides a little bit of exercise. It's actually been the best thing I've ever done for my mental health.

I agree about the mental health.

Sadly, I think so too.

I just found out about that, having had the news pretty much shut off all day. That poor country. Just when you think it can’t get any worse for them, it always does.

So I was turned down for Medicaid.  I'd like to know why.  No reason was given.

Wow! I envy you.  We have the heat and the humidity, but not the long growing season.  It's already August, so we could get a frost any time now.///

It is early for frost, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

You didn't admit to being a white male did you?  I would think they would have to give a reason for denial.  Can you appeal?

First of have to figure out why I was denied.  Then I'll see if I can appeal.  But, yes, I think the reason is that I'm a white male.  The state website more or less makes that clear.

You have white privilege and don't need it; if you had it, you'd be taking it from needy POC.

Also, you are a conservative.

There is probably an appeal mechanism, but it is probably designed to be essentially impossible

I suggest you do not go to the appeal in blackface
