Actually, I think the first version was better.

So, today Morning Sedition talked about how Portland is building mini-villages of tiny "homes" for "the un-housed" (that's apparently the new term for "the homeless").

A lot of fretting about the expense, and some recalcitrants are objecting to the city decreeing that it will plop these "villages"---which will, by the way, be "self-governing"---down in their as-yet-unsqualid neighborhoods without consulting the residents of the neighborhoods.

Whatever happened to Quonset huts?  And, for that matter, does anyone notice that "the problem of the homeless" has been in the hands of "social workers" for 40 years, and has not only not gotten solved, but has gotten much worse and continues to do so?

Portland is also towing RVs and dumping them in neighborhoods.

Mencken's quote about "good and hard"  comes to mind.

I've proposed a number of solutions to "the homeless problem" over the years.  The most important, of course, would be re-institutionalizing the insane, since the unsupervised insane, such as schizophrenics, can clearly not be trusted to take their meds if left to their own devices.  The corollary to this would be to recognize that "the homeless" consists of many subgroups:  the insane (see above), who should never have been de-institutionaiized; the substance-abusers, whether drunks or drug-users; the marginal poor (what used to be called "bums" or "hoboes," some of whom overlap with the substance-abusers); and the down-on-their-luck poor who have no personal "safety net."

All these groups should be treated differently, instead of being lumped into one "homeless" or "un-housed" mass; they have different problems and different needs.

There should be an effort to revive the flophouses and SRO hotels which used to house many of the more-socially-integrated marginal poor.  They were a free-market solution vastly superior to, and socially cheaper than, the government paying high-end rents on behalf of an undifferentiated mass of "homeless."

There should be a re-institution of public baths.  If someone is down on their luck, but wants to find/is capable of finding work, the greatest barrier to their doing so is their being noisome; well-policed public baths would make it possible for the would-be-employed homeless person to make themselves presentable.   A corollary to this would be to have a mail-drop address and lockers available to these people; it is difficult to get a job if you have no address and have to tote all your possessions with you constantly.

If the authorities wish to provide "housing," there are two ways that could be accomplished that would be far cheaper than anything now being done.   One is to build Quonset huts, divided into cubicles, which I alluded to upthread.  The other would be to produce "highrise trailer parks."  Most people are familiar with the urban phenomenon of small parking lots that have metal ramps/frames which allow the lot to "stack" two layers of cars in a single space: adapted to housing, one could quickly and cheaply throw up a girder structure which would allow for three or four stories of trailers---or even used freight containers re-fitted---into a "highrise trailer park."  This would be relatively quick, easy and inexpensive to build, and any individual unit that became irredeemably filthy, infested, or otherwise polluted could be easily pulled out of the framework and replaced by a new one.

And another category,, a significant one, thought it overlaps with the ones you mention (and indeed there's overlap among those as well); the more-or-less voluntarily "homeless",  people who choose to live as drifters.   I recall a piece by Heather MacDonald that showed these as being a remarkably large percentage of the "homeless".

And some of these people make significant money being homeless.

Yesterday was firing day in WA.

Hundreds of firefighters, police officers, and other gov't positions were fired.

All for refusing to be needle raped. Many of them had valid medical exemptions. Many had already had covid and are therefore immune.

The Statists have their new normal.

Do was you or told.

Or Else.

In ancient Egypt, it was customary for the new Pharaoh to chisel his predecessor's name off all the monuments that predecessor had built, and substitute his own.

In modern America, it is now becoming customary for the Fair(ness)-O's to efface the monuments to, and the names of, those who came before them.

However, its shipment is delayed because the Ministry of Climate Change has banned diesel trucks and trains, and there are no electric trucks available, and the government is still taking bids on making all rail lines solar electric. The environmental review for the necessary space for solar panels will take 20 years.

Um.

What?!

And yes, there it is, I just saw it, too.  I didn't realize there was a super-special meaning of "admiral" in this context.

So, again, soi-disant feminists; this is the side of the aisle to which you hitched your wagon, long ago.  And now, they're essentially maintaining that men are better at everything than women - even at being women

My local NPR affiliate---currently in the throes of an endless fundraising drive---is offering a crank radio as a pledge/subscription premium.

This would seem to be coals to Newcastle, given the proportion of cranks who listen to NPR in the first place, but it also suggests that the Greenies/Leftists/wokies (but I repeat myself) are tacitly admitting that the actions/positions they advocate will result in power outages and generally unreliable energy availability.

When I was a lad, I had a dream
That I could become the sex I did not seem
i grew my hair out and wore a dress
And appeared to all who saw me as a big, fat mess
(And appeared to all who saw him as a big, fat mess)
I made myself a mess so thoroughly
That now I'm a four-star Admiral in the Navy
(He made himself a mess so thoroughly
That now he is an Admiral in the Navy!)

Well, in fairness, and how I hate to say that, but a handcrank radio is a fairly standard “emergency“ item, and has been so for a long time. I bought one not long after 9/11.
