Slow morning,  I see

Disney Still Must Pay

Little OR is singing and dancing around the living room.

He also has a positive home Covid test from this morning.  Sigh,

He woke me at 12:45 am saying he’d had a bad dream.  He felt warm, temp was 101.5.  Gave him Motrin and fluids, he went back to bed, fell asleep immediately.  Took his temp 90 minutes later, normal.  I went to bed.  This morning, he was up at 6-ish,as usual.  No fever.  Took his temp again at a little past 9, mild fever, did the Covid test then.

Just got back from doing a PCR test at a nearby site, results should be in tomorrow.

He’s full of energy, slightly sore throat, 99.5 temp, a little sneezing.

Negative home test for me… so far.

Thanks! Interesting article.

Not on my main machine, so I could only give it a quick initial read:  my first impression is that there is certainly some skulduggery afoot here, but it is only tangentially related to the "strip Disney of its copyrights" agitation, which has more to do with the length of the copyright term itself and is also an attack on the copyrights of creators in general, whether or not they have any connection to Disney.  Disney is being used as the stalking horse for a much broader attack.

In this instance, the authors of the works on which Disney is reneging payment likely agreed to a work-made-for-hire  arrangement promising royalties in exchange for their authorship, which leaves them little recourse.

May be an image of 1 person, body of water and text that says 'Wisconsinite getting ready for the week-end.'

I don't really believe this is Wisconsin, there are no white caps on the lake.  There are two kinds of lakes here in April; those still covered with ice and those with 5' waves.  Thank God for May!

If the contract stated they were due royalties, isn't it breach of contract for them to not receive the royalties? Maybe they should sue the people who sold their companies to Disney, as if Disney did not buy the liabilities, those selling still have the liabilities (unless they are bankrupt) and should pay up.

For a different example, I was a contractor for a company that bought the assets but not liabilities of a defunct company.

When someone who had a support contract with the previous company called, they would generally say they did not buy the liabilities, and were not obligated to honor those support contracts.

That is somewhat different, as people who worked for the previous company did get paid and were not owed royalties. Customers would not have had updates or been able to get any support if the new company didn't buy the previous one. (AFAIK, none of the principals of the old one had anything to do with the new one)

I am, alas, not sufficiently versed in the intricacies of M&A dealings in general, let alone these in particular, to say anything other than that, from an observer standpoint, it looks like they got the rawest and most inappropriate of deals---and that there certainly should be some redress forthcoming.  How, and from where, I cannot say.

My own point here is merely that while some elements of copyright and authorship are certainly involved in what appears to be a very questionable cash grab, that does not make this directly a copyright matter of the same sort that the attacks on copyrights and the copyright term generally (and, specifically, attacks on Disney-held copyrights) are.

I am at least going through the motions of precaution, but, yeah, let's face it... I'm here as the sole caregiver of a six year-old.  There are, ah, limitations.  (Normally he'd have gone to his mom this afternoon, but for obvious reasons, he's with me until further notice.)
