I know this won't convince true believers, but Boriqua Gato did a nice takedown of electric cars vs. internal combustion cars

Bad Cat looks at TCO and a little at grid impact.

What he doesn't look at is sourcing the raw materials, huge enviro impact.

Replacement battery cost and disposal. A ten year old Honda Accord is around the cost of battery.

Chevy shows coal-powered car

Zimmerman bragged after showing off a brand-new Chevy Volt and charging station. “It’s alive and well.”

Then things went south when someone asked, “So what’s charging the batteries right now?”

When pressed, Zimmerman said, “Actually, Lansing feeds the building,” referring to the local utility company. “Lansing feeds power to the building.”

“I bet you they’re a bit of coal. Oh, they’re heavy on natural gas, aren’t they?”

No.

Peter Lark, from the Lansing Board of Water & Light, said, “Our grid… is about 95% coal.”

And there you have it, folks: The Car of Tomorrow, powered by the dirty fuel of 19th Century locomotives.

I wish Boriqua [interesting spelling] Gato would discover the Caps key....

Also, a half-mark off for recycling the fake Paris Hilton "stop being poor" photo.

But an interesting analysis, other than that.

He didn't touch on source raw materials, but he did talk a little about replacement battery costs--but not disposal. He pointed out that it would be cheaper to by an Accord and buy carbon indulgences credits.

They actively don't want us moving to natural gas, given the interest in blocking fracking completely.

Coal is of course the Big Bad Boogeyman to the Green-Crazy-Left.

One thing they overlook; coal is incredibly easy (and safe) to store, unlike a lot of other options.  It can be stored as... a great big pile of coal.  Put a fence around it, and you're done.

But coal is eeevil!!!

Coal plants emit more radiation than nuclear plants!

Quick Top Gun: Maverick review.

I enjoyed it, and it was worth the price to see it in an IMAX theater (though as always I had my earplugs along, to reduce the jarring volume).    No, this movie won't change your life philosophy, but it was fun, and the visuals are spectacular.

Interestingly, as in the first movie, they decline to name the aggressor nation (though it's one with an "illegal" uranium-enrichment program, and some old F-14s sitting around... well well well, I think I know who that's supposed to be).

The big, climactic mission seems a little silly, I don't think it's how we'd do that, but it structured the plot, so, okay.

Also, I don't think ejecting from a test airplane that's traveling at Mach 10+ would be conducive to one's health...

I would think you would hit the tail before you could clear the plane at those speeds.

Regarding electric cars, I'd love to see one called "the Anthracite."  Given the apparent state of modern education, I bet few would "get it"----most would likely think it was a cool, tech-sounding name.

I'm planning on starting an electric car company with the modest name "Deus".  Our flagship product will be an electricity-sipping model called the Deus Low-Volt; aka the Crusader.

Excellent name, especially since Crusaders are known to charge most readily.

A mach 10 plane would have to have a capsule ejection, B-58 or B-70 style, or the entire cockpit ejects like the FB-111.

The pre-breathing routing Cruise did before that flight, O2 mask, treadmill, and holding his breathing while donning the helmet is the process the SR-71 and U2 pilots use.

Bill Weaver survived his SR-71 breaking up at mach-3.

Chevy Volt
---apologies to Sammy Johns and "Chevy Van"

You know that the economy was draggin'
Obama threw billions down the rathole
Abrogating bankruptcy law, fillin' the unions' flagon
Because a socialist economy was his end goal

So with tax money panderin' to the mob
Claiming everyone would have green jobs
Assuming that the consumers were dolts
Obama came up with the Chevy Volt
As the car for you and me

It wasn't really that affordable
It wasn't anything you might desire
Didn't go far even when the charge was full
And had a tendency to catch on fire

But with tax money panderin' to the mob
And claimin' everyone would have green jobs
Assuming that the consumers were dolts
Obama came up with the Chevy Volt
As the car for you and me

Turns out there are hidden subsidies
Each car costs almost a quarter mil---
No-one held to account for the amounts
But the unions all have a full till

But with tax money panderin' to the mob
And claimin' everyone would have green jobs
Assuming that the consumers were dolts
Obama came up with the Chevy Volt
As the car for you and me

But with tax money panderin' to the mob
And claimin' everyone would have green jobs
Assuming that the consumers were dolts
Obama came up with the Chevy Volt
As the car for you and me

Given the electric-vehicle craze, when will we see them bring out the Dodge Re-Charger?

Speaking of ee-lectric vee-hicles; I saw a new-looking Tesla S, with Uber stickers on the windshield and side windows.

I find this a bit contradictory (though, yes, I can imagine scenarios where the one thing leads to the necessity of the other).
