Since they closed the 9/11 Memorial Museum, it merely points up why my old memorial plan should have been the one followed.

I proposed that there be a plaza in front of the replacement building(s) which would be paved in a terrazzo map of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, with cast-bronze scale models of many of the more-famous Lower Manhattan buildings jutting up from the terrazzo,  particularly right around the scale models of the Trade Center as it was.  There would be two eternal lights, one in each of the Trade Center towers,  which would have representations of the planes jutting out from the Towers where they hit.

The retaining wall around the plaza would have the names of the dead carved into them.  There would be a scattering of brass flakes in the terrazzo from the Trade Center towards the Brooklyn part of the map, recalling the scattering of papers and memoranda (some still burning) which floated down over Brooklyn as the Towers came down.

A plaza of this sort, unlike a "museum," would not have to be "open" and staffed; it would be an open space where people could stroll like giants among the map and buildings representing the commemorated incident, and gaze at the flames in remembrance.

A much better idea. Of course there wouldn't be an entire museum bureaucracy to create jobs for.  All projects of this sort end up being jobs programs.

True---on the other hand, the closure of the "memorial museum" pretty much puts paid to the "jobs program."
