Happy Friday! I've been super busy at work the last few weeks. Next week I'll be in Memphis, and the week after I'm having new flooring installed in my house and my entire interior painted. At some point I have to start my garden. So naturally it seems like the perfect time to reestablish my freelance writing and editing service. Who needs sleep?

After two years of vainly petitioning the Copyright Office to fix an incomplete registration certificate, it appears that my last letter, to the Register of Copyrights herself, was successful; my client received the complete certificate today.

Hot ziggety!

Nice!

My morning was less productive. I had to take the van in to have the lift looked at; the lift has been acting wonky like it has a short in it, and I'm pretty sure it needs to be replaced. The lift dealer poo-poohed that statement and demanded I bring it in so they could decide how much work would be necessary to fix it. 4 hours later, he agreed a new lift needs to go in. Just listen to me, people!

Now, of course, comes the really fun part---there are several other certificates that need the same correction.

But I don't have to deal with that until next week or so.

Meantime, I managed to get rid of a whole lot of stuff in my storage unit---so that I now have room for all the stuff that won't fit into my new space, but which I don't want to ditch yet.  I got rid of two tables---an Art Moderne table that used to be in my kitchen (red formica top, chrome edging, modernistic legs, and an incredibly heavy grey steel desk/table (one locking drawer) by Shaw-Walker, with a brown linoleum surface, rounded edges, and steel corners; a vintage drawing table with a heavy cast-iron base; a plant stand with Empire feet; one of those wooden stands that opens like scissors to hold a suitcase; and two 3-drawer steel lateral files and a side-piece with two drawers and a file drawer.

The guy gave me pennies on the dollar---but I needed the space more, and realized that given what I'd been paying over the years for the space rental, he could have given me the full retail price and I'd still be losing money, so what the hell.  In the case of the Shaw-Walker table, I saw one for sale a few years ago for about $1500; needless to say, I didn't get anything within shouting distance of that.  But, too, I got the table free---just as the Art Moderne table and the plant stand were things that I'd picked up from the street.

It's so nice to not be curating these items any more.

When I moved house, I filled a 1-800-GOT-JUNK truck to the tune of over $500 and still brought a ton of stuff to the new house. I'm the curator of the future Doppel Family Museum because no one else has room for it. But with the redecorating happening, it's a good time to get rid of a lot of stuff.

I have a cousin who needs to learn the Frozen song Let It Go. She has multiple storage garages filled with furniture from previous family members who passed away that she won't let go of. Part of it is that she's trying to provide furniture to the next generation that is just starting to get married and have kids; I can't argue that her desire is good. But she is spending a fortune holding on to this furniture when there is a better than average chance that these youngsters will want to get their own stuff.

Brown stuff doesn't sell - no one under 50 wants dark, heavy furniture. My BF used to deal in antiques as a sideline, he says there's just no demand for Grandma's sideboard. Which means if you do like it, there are bargains to be had.

As for the Red Balloon, if this were a less PC day, I'd suggest the military personnel moon the balloon as it passes. Extra credit for lining them up to spell "Fuck Xi", and even more if the do it in Chinese characters.
