Something different to start today: a lawyer has taken to sharing his deposition videos of Child Protective Services' employees who are being deposed for taking children out of their homes unlawfully--and the careful way he takes them apart is supposedly something to see, although I'm not going to watch this at work. But it's nice to see at least one government group getting hammered for abuses of power.

CPS is a disaster most places. Way over beaurocratized.

It's like most government jobs, i draws people with a agenda.

Was there ever a time when it worked well, and how long ago was that, I wonder?

The more cases they have, the more money they get. They're incentivized to break up families.

"In fairness": I think it's very, very tough thing to get "right", given what's at stake.  The freedom vs. societal interest balance is a hard one.

No doubt about that. What I saw in my time as foster parent the ivory tower syndrome on steroids. They would hire academicians, with all the degrees and certifications. But who had no children, no experience with anything other the reading papers to write another paper. Then a committee of this jackwagons with tons of learning and no knowledge, and a total absence of wisdom would send decrees down from on high.

You want a good CPS system. Give me 3 good sets of foster parents, 6 good CPS lie workers, and 3 sets of parents who when through the system on got their lives straightened out and 6 kids who grew up in the system and turn out all right. They will give you a system that works.

The wife of a good friend of mine from grad school worked for CPS for many years.  She was very good at her job; unfortunately she ended up doing clean-up when people who were hired essentially as patronage jobs (shocking, I know, in a Democrat-run city and county).  There was one particularly awful case that made all the headline.  The person responsible was not held accountable and she was under very strong pressure to "put a good face" on things when she was called to testify in court.  After that she quit and worked as a cashier at Belk's for a while until she got a really good job with ATT.

but such a system would not allow “credentialed” people to get the right jobs!
