Biden’s CHIPS Act and Taiwan Semi: What If They Gave Away $53 Billion, but Nobody Wanted It?

I remember when Democrats called such subsidies as handouts for crony capitalists. So of course Democrats required that profits be capped and that the government get into TSMC's books and work processes. Why? I can only guess they want to steal information and give it to their buddies to start parallel companies that they can invest in and reap the benefits of.

As if these people have any clue what it takes to make CPU chips.

As much as I want to think Trump has good ideas, I really have to wonder if you can end homelessness. What I have seen of his remarks have either been a lot of non sequiturs or the media has turned them into non sequiturs (which would not surprise me in the least).

We've talked (JCM in particular) about those who have no desire to hold any responsibility and thus want to do nothing but exist; those who are beholden to drugs; those in the care industry who want to create more homeless people to keep themselves in jobs; etc. etc. You can make incentives, but you can't change everyone.

SpaceSex Starship launched!

And then, a few kilometers up, it blew up (or was blown up on purpose, because the stages weren't separating).

And everyone applauded!

So... partial success?

If it got off the pad and cleared the tower, it was a success.  And the unscheduled rapid disassembly will provide useful data for future attempts.

Partially, yes.  Of course it would have been nicer if the whole thing had worked as planned.  But, iterative process, etc.

It launched got through max-Q so partial success. My observation some of the first stage engines were not firing, all on one side. I also observed a skew in the flight before separation. The rocket was a little sideways. I'm surprised it didn't disintegrate at the point. Tough machine. That skew would have put a lateral pressure on the upper stage. That would seem to me that the lateral forces could bind up the staging mechanism and prevent stage separation.

Well, the definitive review of today's SpaceX Starship launch is now in, thanks to a text I just received from Little OR (who watched the launch at school):

"In my opinion, the explosion was not as dramatic as I'd hoped.":

ANd I note it was properly set to members only! I forgot that once and had to fix it (which can be done after it is up)

At the bottom left was an indication of what rocket motors were firing, even from the beginning. Looking at it again, there still seemed to be some engines running after the main engine cutoff time. Some fire a distance from the rocket. And the explosion seemed to occur at the base, where the engines are.

There were also plumes higher up on the rocket, possibly causing forces putting it out of control.

Rocket science isn't that hard - I derived the rocket equation as a sophomore college student. Rocket ENGINEERING is hard.

Only one of the other people watching it with us was as into this as much as I am, but it was still nice to see.

OR,

This might give little OR some perspective on the explosion.

That certainly showed that something went wrong at MECO (Main Engine Cut Off). A flat trajectory when staging makes sense but that went on too long. Something prevented the staging and then, a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly
