And this morning I just saw what perhaps will be the next George Floyd. Crazy black man in his early 20s, shirtless, wearing makeshift pants, walking up the Avenue screaming and cursing, veering out into traffic, kicking over newspaper boxes and such. I was with my son, so I had no choice but to just get out of there. I do wonder how the police are handling these things these days. And God bless them for having to deal with his crap day in and day out.

Washington DC police officer 'fighting for her life' after shooting kills teen, injures 20
A Washington, D.C. police officer is "fighting for her life" after being wounded early Sunday in a shootout that killed a teenager and sent many people to the hospital, Police Chief Peter Newsham said at a press conference.Police responded to reports of shots fired shortly before 1 a.m. at a large gathering in the 3300 block of Dubois Place, part of a residential neighborhood in southeast Washington. And why was a gathering of several hundred people not broken up long before "gunfire erupted" (as if it's Mt. Vesuvius or something, just a natural phenomenon)?

Just like the headlines here went from 2 (or 3) "employees" (whatever that means) of a school district (with 143 schools, 23,300 teachers, and God knows how many other employees) tested positive for Covid, possibly exposing 260 other employees (i.e., everyone who works in that same school), to headlines that implied that there were 260 teachers with Covid (none of whom could have gotten from a student, btw, since none of them are in school). The level of mendacity in the media beggars belief.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 48: I'd seen that a while back; it's very good. A number of lines closely echo lines from Fussell's "Thank God for the Atom Bomb"; whether Whittle used it as a base text or not, I don't know. Fussell fought with the 45th Division in Europe, and was considered something like 40% disabled after the war---but despite that disability from his wounds in the European Theater, he was slated to be one of the people thrown into the invasion of the home islands. The bombs saved him from that.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 48: Probably won't watch the video, as I prefer reading, but I think a good answer to anyone who says that we shouldn't have used nuclear bombs is "So you'd prefer millions of Japanese civilian deaths? Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 50: Unfortunately the "narrative" that the Japanese had already been beaten and were ready to surrender has been repeated over and over again. It had its origins within Japanese diplomatic circles, but the people who were telling the tale had no power over the military. They were prepared to fight to the bitter end.

Reply to lucius septimius in 51: And after both bombs, the military was still trying to kill the Emperor before he could surrender. As you know, that "narrative" is as false as the narrative that the riots are peaceful protests.
