Not denying the existence of genuine mental illness, but I think we took a wrong turn when behavior that was once characterized as a moral failing or evidence of bad character in need of discipline was reconceptualized as mental illness in need of treatment. With the rise of victimhood as a coveted identity, you get more victims. 

I would like to hear more about her self-reported childhood trauma. Whatever made her start lying, it's obvious she was rewarded for it and that led to more lying. I don't think she came clean due to a come to Jesus moment. I think she decided to out herself before someone else exposed her. At this point, she gets zero sympathy from me.

I've been saying for years that psychiatry/the concept of "mental illness" is merely another in the long line of 19th-century pseudoscience concepts that we are still struggling with, often without realizing it.  

Eugenics? Pseudoscience.  "Race?" Basically pseudoscience; it amounts to classifying peoples on the basis of observed color and the physical resemblances bred by proximity.  The notion that "homosexuality" existed as a "condition" separate and distinct from "heterosexuality" was a 19th-century pseudoscientific invention concocted to use the claim "I'm born this way" as a means to take the behavior pattern out from under the cloud of moral condemnation.  "Antisemitism" was a pseudoscientific term invented to make Jew-hate sound "scientific" and therefore parlor-acceptable,  as the "progressive" types who were shucking off religion needed an excuse for their hatred not based in religious sectarianism.  One could probably do a Venn diagram showing the overlap of the pseudoscience of eugenics, the pseudoscience of "race," and the pseudoscience of "secularism" to create the pseudoscience of antisemitism.

We've ditched some of the 19th-century pseudosciences; mesmerism, orgone boxes, "electrical therapy" (though electroshock therapy survived into our own era).  But we haven't yet ditched the pseudoscience of Marxism.

I think we'd be better off if we took William Faulkner's famous dictum, "The past is not dead; it is not even past" to heart, and realized that the 20th century, and now the 21st, were and are battlegrounds over the pseudoscience crazes of the 19th century.

Mental illness is still at the phase where they can't tell the cause, and have to go by the symptoms. That's why they try different medications to see which one works (if any) - there is no biochemical test to find the root cause.

As for Marxism, I said a long time ago, the search for a  workable way of  redistributing wealth is the search for  the Philosopher's Stone  of political alchemy, trying to turn people's base instincts to gold. It won't work.

Well, they've identified some things with chemical causes, like epilepsy and schizophrenia---and, having done so, have enjoyed some success in treating them.

But when a "profession" can create or eliminate "mental illnesses" by voting on whether or not they exist---which they have done with homosexual behavior and "transgenderism/gender dysphoria"---that "profession" is self-evidently a nest of fraud.
