Morning. Day off finally and a chance to relax and get things sorted out for dinner tomorrow. Will be shipping a Christmas dinner to my mom and brother since they aren't up to travelling to our place and the wife and I aren't up to spending time there. We are burnt out and we find my mom's place to be too dark and depressing. Besides I don't think they could handle a full day of the high energy of the Squire.

And now for something weird and bizarre. Wife practices reiki and I can feel her hands really heat up when she touches me. Last night we were relaxing in bed and getting ready for sleep and she placed her hand on my back. Started doing her reiki on me and suddenly she gasped in shock. Something was pushing against her and I was feeling it as well. All of a sudden she started babbling about all my anger issues aren't mine. I was needing to atone for something my forebears had done and I was the "chosen one" to do it. She actually used the phrase that I was the "pivot". The Squire is part of the atonement for some reason and that's the reason he's here. Apparently it has to do with something on my dad's side of the family.
Needless to say I sobered up and woke up and couldn't sleep for a little while.

Absolutely. Actually, I'd just like the ghost of Ed McMahon show up with a big check.

Yeah real "ghost of Christmas Past". Worst part is that I don't have a clue. Dad's side of the family is a complete mystery to me and I have only barely pieced together bits and pieces of my Great Grandfather's life and travels. Anything outside of that is terra icognita. Just know where the family came from originally.

Keighly Yorkshire. According to Family Search the first forefather they have found is about mid 18th century. Lots of info missing apparently.

Reply to PaladinPhil in 13: I started looking into this after I was permanently laid off. Early retirement, yippee! I also found useful, www.rootsweb.ancestry.com and www.findagrave.com websites. Although none of them are 100% completely accurate. People entering the data do make mistakes. There should be a law that a first name can only be used once in each family. The findagrave really helps confirm birth and death dates. Quite often shows family lineage.

I'm dreaming of a wet Christmas....
Forecast for tomorrow is 1-2" of rain, on top of the snow already on the ground.
As iirc Accuweather said, Santa will need a boat.
Taking today off in addition to tomorrow holiday.
Will be making corned beef today. I do it differently than most people; I use a covered roasting pan with some water on the bottom, and then when there is about 1 1/2 hours left, wash and throw in small potatoes. Baste every so often so the potatoes absorb the flavorful liquid.

Kabbalistically, we are all here to correct past mistakes. I know a lot of people dismiss the spiritual side, and a lot of others have some perverted form of it (New Agers, etc.), but there is something there that we generally don't see.

I think I would need to make a physical trip to England.
My English peeps were from Devon. I still have relatives in Brighton, but that part of the family moved down from Scotland in the early 19th century.

Newspapers.com is another resourceful tool also. It's worth the subscription for a short term. Lots of interesting stories in world-wide newspapers about your family. Things they never told you about. Found out one relative on my in-laws side used to be a she before they were a he. That's never been brought up at family gatherings!

Well no matter what else happens today, have the turkey brining for tomorrow. Wife is baking cookies in the morning and after that's done I will be popping the turkey in the oven. The Squire is going to be spoiled rotten this year. Wife and I will be getting a single present each and I hope she likes what I got her.

I know my father's side was from Lithuania, just from the name. Mother's side was from the same region, but with a stop in England, and their name was Anglicized on the way.
Both sides came to the US a bit over 100 years ago or so.
Beyond that, nothing.

In terms of family origin: I’ll have you know, my ancestors stole horses from some of the finest families in Ireland.
One side there was a likely a name change and move so so the trail dies out, it is suspected that part of the family needed a new start.
On my father's side she tracked back to Scotland and England. The Scottish side we are Clan Thompson, tartan and everything.
The other part of my father's side goes back to the first Protestant preacher in Kent, England and long line of abolitionist activists, who came her late 1600's to for the greater religious freedom.

My family appears to have come from England, France, Ireland and Germany. The earliest Americans are on my mother's side. They came in the 1600's. According to the names, I think some of them became Quakers/Amish types. I always thought I'd make a good Amish wife. Except I don't like cooking, hard work, no mirrors (I would need one to put my mascara on in the morning), no indoor plumbing and I scared of animals larger than myself. Other than that, I think I'd be good at it.

The WWII PT boats were based on rumrunner boats. Those boats were fast; 3 large Packard engines. The designer went on to design the PT boats, which also had to be fast.
So I guess it was appropriate for the crew to distill torpedo juice to make it drinkable.
