Work is officially closed, and yet I have to do a MS Teams call in half an hour.
This is literally worse than slavery and the Holocaust, combined.

Note the line above the bold... auditable and recountable paper ballots. My contention is Bush v. Gore... not the punch cards either.

Reply to JCM in 4: Picture in #4 does not load. As to the topic itself, it seems clear that a very large number of people in positions of responsibility were aware that Dominion was...well, let's say "flawed"...but had no trouble letting it ride and doing nothing whatever about it.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 7: Let's compare that to yesterday's story of Alec Baldwin's wife. She was pretending to be Spanish. So what we have is that ethnicity which is highly subjective, a person cannot "feel" they are of that group, cannot identify with a ethnic group by choice. However biological sex, which is scientifically objective, that a person can feel and choose which sex they are. Combine that with your War is Peace story above. We really are living in 1984.

Only you could have possibly come up with this connection. Also: IMHO, the singer sounds rather like Gene Wilder, doing a flamboyantly "gay" voice.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 11: While we're on the subject, that record, "I'd Rather Be Spanish," is the source for the title of the '30s-style chorus number "The French Mistake," at the end of "Blazing Saddles." Note that Malin, after singing about how he'd "rather be Spanish than mannish," concludes the song with "I'm Spanish, but why bring that up? Voila!" "Voila!" is, of course, French, not Spanish---it is "The French Mistake," and, given the nature of the song, is clearly the inspiration for the over-the-top "gay" acting in that "Blazing Saddles" number.

Now, was "Spanish" an actual/widely-understood euphemism for homosexual at the time, or was Malin just affecting that for purposes of the song?

I think he was doing it to stretch the metaphor of "bull-fighting," but it's a tough question. The whole "Latin lover" thing was big in the '30s, and usually---but not always---in a heterosexual context; see (or, "sí," if you prefer), e.g., South American Joe. Notice, by the way, in that song, another song reference to "Lady, Play Your Mandolin," a popular double-entendre song of the day, and the "Isidore" reference at the end, which is clearly a Jewish allusion for some reason---possibly a suggestion that Jews would pass as South American because it was more socially-acceptable than being Jewish.

Homeless group takes up residence in Fife [WA] motel as operator turns to city for help FIFE, Wash. — Several homeless people have moved into over a dozen motel rooms in Fife and are no longer paying for the accommodations, prompting the motel manager to seek assistance from city officials in order to force the group out of the building.Members of an organization called Tacoma Housing Now paid for 16 rooms to secure one overnight stay on Dec. 24 at the Travelodge, located at 3518 Pacific Highway E. More than 40 homeless people moved in and indicated that they had no plans to pay for additional nights. Activists with Tacoma Housing Now are lobbying for the city or the county to pick up motel bill as the manager worries that he will have to fire his staff and close his business if the group doesn't vacate the lodge.

Let's add this story out of Fife to this story out of NYC. Coronavirus NY: Lawmakers extend eviction moratorium in special sessionLandowners can no longer derive income from their property. However let them lapse in utilities or taxes and the owner will be the villain. Will the lawmakers offer any assistance to the owners? Nah, didn't think so. In effect property ownership for rental properties has been socialized. Gov't control, private ownership with all the risk, no reward. Is in effect any different from Hugo Chavez walking down the street pointing and "appropriating" properties? Not one damn bit. How about business, privately owned, but the gov't control is nearly complete, when you open, how many customers, how much you pay employees, even in someplace like Seattle controlling employee work schedules. What is that? Socialism.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 23: The responses to that were hilarious. "They only asked 1,000 people and 186 of them picked Trump! It doesn't mean anything!" Uh, may I introduce you to the concept of sampling? The same technique used in every poll? I am so tired of stupid people.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 34: Dayum indeed. Remember when Bill Cosby was America's Dad and he delivered some home truths to the black community about fatherhood? He may have turned out to be a creepy pervert, but he was right about that. Notice too the gap between African Americans and African immigrants to America. You can't blame racism when people who look like you are succeeding. Yes, there are other reasons for the socioeconomic gap, but you can't ignore that basic truth.
