Kosh---re your showerhead conversation with OR in last night's Pub, given the cheap price of the one he recommended you might want to consider laying in one as a contingency spare. Things that work, and things that are cheap, and especially things that are both, have a tendency to suddenly disappear from availability right when you suddenly need to acquire them. I believe in keeping spare parts and tools around.

NPR's Morning Sedition was droning on and on, yet again, about "racism" in connection with the availability/distribution of coronavirus vaccine. Once again, the government is being racist if "communities of color" receive distribution priority, because the Tuskeegee Experiments of decades ago prove the government is racist. But if "communities of color" do not receive distribution priority, then that, too, is racist because white folks are being favored.

I'm going to be damned just for thinking that I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't, so at this point, I just don't give a damn. Morning, campers.

As well, regular internet connection is back, more or less. Had to do some internal trouble shooting this morning to figure out why some connections weren't working. Restarted the main router and things are better.

Morning, everyone. I got a call from my Brooklyn daughter on Saturday night. Apparently a pipe burst and flooded her basement apartment for the second time. The mattress is probably ruined and she and her boyfriend are staying with friends. Did I mention that the apartment doesn't have heat except for what radiates from upstairs? She didn't want to pay her rent today so I had to explain why that would be counterproductive, even though NYC has very strong tenants' rights laws. The lease is up at the end if the month and they're planning to move anyway. They'd better get back every penny of their deposit.

So, if the groundhog can't get out of its hole because it is covered with a foot of snow, then it won't see its shadow and that means shorter winter, or because it ends up back in the hole, does it mean a longer winter? //////

And DSL modems are getting hard to find now, Got this one at Staples, but they don't carry them anymore.

That’s in part, as I mentioned, because it’s so counterintuitively Italian; cheap, ugly, works flawlessly and no maintenance needed. Also, because this is sort of like “guerrilla plumbing“, a thumb in the eye to the environmentalist crazies who are insisting we all use low flow showers forever.

There's an SJ Perelman story/essay---it might be "What Am I Doing Away From Home?", but I can't remember now for sure---where he talks about how "a plumbing fixture in the house suddenly gave way, and while the plumber was awaiting arrival of a replacement from Cartier's..." So the problem of expensive and difficult to get plumbing fixtures is not a new one.

Their hand-held shower looks like the hose is longer than a standard American hand-held. That alone would be nice.

Reply to JCM in 26: Reminds me of a joke about old cowboy movies. The good guy and bad guy would shoot at each other in a mine, with so many shots from their six-shooters that they'd be mining lead for months. BTW, I did get to hold an 1890 Colt revolver, worth $25,000, when we visited the gun expert my wife uses. However, rule was no pictures and no info about where we were.

Reply to JCM in 30: I noticed that about half the article seemed to deal with revenues from state pot sales. Are they also planning on selling smack, crank, and blow? There is something really disturbing about the state deciding that selling drugs is the way to solvency.

Reply to lucius septimius in 32: What they ought to be doing is selling antipsychotic drugs over the counter. Fun fact: After I was hospitalized for an intestinal disorder, I was prescribed a drug that was used for digestive problems as well as schizophrenia and psychosis. I only took it for a week or so and experienced noticeable withdrawal symptoms. Unsurprisingly, it is no longer sold in the US.
