They have intentionally misunderstood Abbott's action as "banning masks", period.  

What he did was rescind an order mandating their general use; he didn't "ban" their use.

This is the whole reason why Carbon Credits are off the table and huge subsidies for "Green Tech" is in.  Taxes piss people off; subsidies created vast hordes of rent-seekers and lobbyists to keep the watermelons in power and help them increase their control over society and the economy.  Win win for everyone (except tax payers).

Which is why a bunch of people voted for Trump. Then, when he was actually effective in implementing the processes and promises he made, the regular political folks got very scared. So there is a feedback loop in the system to make sure the political sphere stays entirely the same--get paid for doing minimal work and always pushing closer to socialism.

The best source I've found for COVID info, including the virulence of variants and whether or not they are resistant to antibodies and vaccines, is the Jerusalem Post. Yes, sometimes a later article finds an earlier one was incorrect, but they are clear, and cover this a lot better than any "news" outlet in the US that I have seen.
