Reply to Occasional Reader in 4: Talked to DC daughter last night. She hates the barriers around the Capitol. I considered explaining that the Democrats are deliberately creating the false impression that a physical attack from the right is an imminent danger, but she is convinced that QAnon is real. She was understandably rattled by 1/6, but she claims she has mild PTSD from it. I'm thinking, you need to meet someone who served in Iraq, or a survivor of abuse, then come back and talk to me about PTSD.

Seattle City Council mulls plan to pay legal fees for tenants facing eviction If approved, the legislation would add a new section to the municipal housing code that would allow for the city to provide a lawyer to any renter facing a court eviction hearing. The city would be required to cover the costs for that legal representation. Under the measure, as soon as the tenant receives a summons for the eviction proceeding, the resident could ask for an attorney free of charge no matter what the tenant's annual income is. No problem... only 20% decrease in revenue and $337 Billion deficit.

I don't actually mind them. First off, I get the rationale; the White House was too vulnerable to a truck bomb. Second, closing that piece of the avenue off made for a nice sort of adjoining bit of Lafayette Park, so it wasn't such an aesthetic and moral eyesore as is the current Capitol Berlin Wall. Of course, under Joe "Unity" Biden, Lafayette Park is now mostly closed off, too, so...

I know that the protocols for building US Embassies beginning in the 90s would not have allowed for an embassy to be located that close to a street; same rationale for the White House.

Reply to CyberSimian in 12: I understand the need for security, but the DMZ look around the Capitol is deliberately ugly and intimidating. I remember my first visit in 1986, thinking what a beautiful city it was. Notice one of the first things Biden did was rescind Trump's order that new federal buildings would be built in classical style. The whole point of Brutalist architecture is to crush the human spirit. Where totalitarians go, ugliness follows.

According to an article up at WZ, the editor of the Lancet, Richard Horton, has praised China and the World Health Organization for their responses to the coronavirus pandemic. Ironic, isn't it? Even as Dr. Seuss is being "canceled," Horton hears a WHO.

I recall being at lunch with four Latin American colleagues (including one Mexican) a few years back; they were all sneering at "Trump's border wall", declaring that walls don't work, people will just use taller ladders, etc. I asked: So, thinking of your respective family homes, in your respective home countries... they all have walls and/or fences around the property... right? They grudgingly acknowledged that yes, of course they did. (Middle-class Latinos who come to the US are usually startled to see that the norm for middle-class homes here is NOT to have a wall around the property.)

Larry Niven told a story once. His mother never read sci-fi, except for occasionally some of his stories. Once, when he won a Hugo, his mother picked up the collection of Hugo winning short stories in order to read his. She liked it, and figured it couldn't hurt to try reading another story in the collection. She saw one with a cute title, "A Boy and His Dog" ... Larry said that he wished his mother had asked him first. He would have stopped her. Long story short, she will never read any SF again except for his.

So regulations at work have taken what would have been a standard computer replacement job (slightly difficult, as it runs custom software that is very persnickety) into a full-day discussion with the controls department, as they have codified a bunch of standards (a good thing, generally) and now are requiring permission to allow exceptions for fiddly systems like this. I try not to sigh or roll my eyes as I fill out the forms, but I must admit I am mightily tempted.
