WA State Employment Security Department (ESD) is a disaster. Last year the director, a former Microsoft 'net security director and Dem super bundler turned off the agency internet security and lost a Billion dollars. She's now in the Biden Administration. Talk about failing up. Tens of thousands in Wash. may have to repay jobless benefits
Feek told a Senate work session that the department will be working with the 55,000 claimants who’ve received repayment notifications after failing to respond to agency requests for information and being ruled ineligible for benefits already received.Feek noted that some 9,000 claimants have never been paid any benefits and are still waiting for the ESD to resolve an eligibility question or other issue with their claims.

Reply to JCM in 2: Interesting. I know in Massachusetts and most other states, the problem is due to organized syndicates using identity information stolen from unrelated breaches. That also means that probably many of the people being asked to repay benefits never actually received the money. We were warned at work that if we received communication from Unemployment to report it to the fraud hotline. The only thing I ever got was an obvious phishing text that gave a link not to the mass.gov site but to some other domain that was registered via Godaddy. (.gov domains are handled by GSA). I could not find a fraud line to report it to, so I just reported it as a spam text.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 3: The WA one smells even more. ESD blamed the loss on, I kid you not, Nigerian scammers. However AFTER the loss was discovered it too a month to turn security back on, and two months to report the issue to any law enforcement. Mind you this happened under the watchful eye of a supposed 'net security specialist. There has been no real investigation of what happened and apparent no attempt to claw back the funds. Given that the person in charges is both a security specialist and a (D) operative, and there is no effort to investigate leads many to speculate that there was political skullduggery involved.

Reply to JCM in 4: Massachusetts started instituting extra security controls as soon as this came out. Yes, other states blame Nigerian and other scammers, but have been making effort to block the fraud immediately. I know Mass. did from the reports of people legitimately trying to claim benefits that got stuck in the security checks.

Why all the insanity on the Left Coast? Is China putting some craziness in the atmosphere that rains down there? Massachusetts can be ridiculously liberal, but not that crazy.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 7: As if the nose is the only problem. Hint - the MOUTH spreads viruses, too, which is why so many COVID cases come from singing and praying in religious establishments.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 7: My favorite is the clear shield over the nose and mouth with a gap all around. Not a filter, just a personal sneeze guard. Beside the point of the pointlessness of masks....

How to misrepresent data. Flu deaths for the last 6 months or so have been called Covid Like Illness, CLI and counted not as flu but as covid. You could make the same chart with the same ratios out of any age group because it.
