Buzz, on your Passover Pub post:

There are differences between Sephardic and Ashkenazic traditions, too. And in many Sephardic and Mizrahi (mideast) areas, vegetables would have been more available.

Rice is kosher for Passover in the Sephardic and Mizrahi traditions, as are legumes. The best explanation I have heard as to why rice is not in the Ashkenazic tradition is that it was not grown in Ashkenazic regions, the rabbis there were not familiar with it, and it was likely adulterated with a cheaper grain that would not be kosher, while rice is grown in the Sephardic areas and generally available and not adulterated. No good explanation for legumes, however.

A while ago my daughter, during moving, asked about a seder plate my father had gotten, iirc, in Algeria during WWII. I looked up some of the Sephardic traditions to figure out what is on the plate. Picture and more in the Frontier.

Very interesting.  Left a comment.

There's an Ashkenazic custom that I did not learn about until adulthood, to NOT use an actual lamb shankbone on the Seder plate, but to use a chicken-wing instead.  I'd always been taught that one used a lamb shankbone as a recollection of the Passover sacrifice, though there's the added resonance of that shankbone being called a "zroah" in Hebrew, which is the same word used in the Haggadah to refer to the "[mighty hand and] outstretched arm" of God in freeing the Israelites.

Well, back in the day, you didn't go to the butcher's to get a shankbone---you had to kill a lamb, or have one killed---and, apparently, it is Ashkenazic custom to NOT eat lamb on Passover because it might be confused with a legitimate Passover sacrifice.  And, with refrigeration nonexistent back in the day, that meant you'd be wasting an entire lamb to get a symbolic shankbone.  It would appear that that is where the custom of using a chicken wing---also an "outstretched arm," kinda sorta---on the Seder plate to substitute for the lamb shank came from, since people were probably eating the rest of the chicken for the meal anyway.

The New Normal is perpetual lockdowns

"The bad news is we're finding an increasing number of variants each week," Duchin said.</blockquote>Of course you find new variants every week.

IT IS A GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKING RNA VIRUS!</b> RNA virus frequently mutate because it has no error correction. I said when the first "variant" was found this would happen.

Fauci: Masks aren't necessary.

All the "authorities" guidance at that point, CDC, WHO, HNS etc... all the science, the papers said masks for the general population were not effective and were not needed. Same with social distancing and shutdowns.

A few days later the guidance changed, the science did not. No supporting evidence, no science to change it.

Scientific American article said COVID does have genes to reduce the mutation rate, which is somewhat unusual (but not unknown).

Another reason I think it was the result of research, probably bioweapon development, as you would not want a bioweapon mutating out of range of the vaccines you would have to protect your own people.

It might be able to reduce it, but without error correct the mutation rate will still be high.

Notice these articles say variants. But most variations aren't consequential. So saying "we're finding several new variants a  week" doesn't mean much.

What matter is changes to the sequence that affect the virulence or severity of the infection.

Statistically those changes will more often decrease the viruses effects or render it inert.

The medical / science community KNOWS this. Yet they are shopping to the media the idea that very variant is this new thing that requires a renewal of the mask, lockdown measures.

It's fucking garbage. This is crap I learned in High School biology for g-d's sake!

I posted a link to a Jpost article that the vaccines are still effective against the variants, but not as well against some (South African one comes to mind).

A bioweapon would need to be stable enough not to make vaccines useless. The variants don't seem to be doing that.

That is, they don't seem to be mutating in such a way as to make vaccines useless. COVID has one particular protein that attaches to cells, unlike flu with several variants. Small changes to that one protein might reduce the effectiveness of vaccines, but even the least of these (J&J) is more effective than most flu vaccines. Pfizer shows around 97% effectiveness in Israel, which is excellent for a vaccine. And that is against all variants in Israel.

The best source for info I've seen is the Jerusalem Post.

The mutations aren't occuring in the identification sequence.

If the identification sequence changes it is more than likely that it a change that renders it non-infections, the sequences becomes one which can't "dock" with a human cell.
