Reply to lucius septimius in 4: Anyone who didn't see this coming is an idiot. The next couple of years are going to be a nightmare. I think we should focus on getting rid of the unconstitutional changes to election laws, especially HR 1 if it passes. If we can't retake retake Congress in '22, we are likely to lose the Republic completely.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 1: I once heard a talk by someone from Pakistan who converted from Islam to Judaism. I will use the gender-neutral pronouns here so I do not give much info about this person. This talk was shortly after a bombing of an Easter celebration in Pakistan. Zhe said that there was a time where zhe would have been a suicide bomber, such was the way people are brought up in Pakistan.

ROTC Cadets Wearing Heels for Sexual Assault Awareness Spurs Review The Army's Cadet Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky, is reviewing Reserve Officer Training Command cadet participation in a sexual assault awareness 5K walk/run event in which cadets at Temple University in Philadelphia wore high-heeled shoes with their uniforms. The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event was one of the major observances for the 2015 Sexual Assault Awareness Month, with cities and towns across the U.S. and Canada hosting the walk/run. Back in 2015!

As part of the toy train they are putting pedestrian bridge from a station across I-5 to a community college. The design phase of this cost a mere $30 million. This is the result.

They've been doing construction near the Concord rotary on Rt. 2 in Massachusetts. I thought it was for the long-needed redesign to prevent the 20 minute or more backups at the rotary (pre-COVID). Nope. Looks like they're building an overpass to make one long BIKE trail.

Site glitch was server update. I got into the hosting company's site to get the message they were doing server maintenance, which might cause a short interruption. Then the site was back.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 13: I haven't seen the bridge cost. Last year there was actually journalism done and at that point they had spent $30 M on just the design phase the proposals, the decision process. All before the actual design was selected.

I'm so sick of the lies about the voting law in Georgia. it is LESS restrictive than similar laws in at last five blue states. And IDs are free. You already have to show ID to vote; this is only a change on mail-in ballots and if in place in November would have increased the number of black votes cast.

So Little OR’s kindergarten has a “science” project this week on, can you guess?
RECYCLING! Hosannah hosannah. (Again.)
And.apparently we were supposed to be collecting all sorts of things during this past week to recycle. I wonder, do shell casings count?

In #25 Occasional Reader said: we were supposed to be collecting all sorts of things during this past week to recycle. I wonder, do shell casings count? Well, metal objects do get recycled well. In fact, over half the ferrous metal used in the US is recycled, because with modern equipment, it produces quite good metal, and can be done in an electric mini-mill on site where the metal is used. Brass, copper, aluminum, also recycle well. Glass, fairly well. The quality isn't as good but quite suitable for many products. Plastic, less so, but there are some products that can be made with recycled plastic. And Israel has figured out how to make recyclable plastic from trash (including dirty diapers!) Recycling paper, that is, post-consumer paper as opposed to scrap during the paper production process, is not efficient and the output product is not as good.
Note the best materials to recycle are those that are recycled at high temperature, which reduces problems with impurities. (Got some plastic in with the steel? It pretty much gets reduced to carbon, which is used in the steelmaking process.) Same with glass, but carbon in the glass is an impurity, so the quality isn't as good.
