So Windows updated, and there, on the taskbar near the time, is the weather. Click on it and a box with "news" pops up - NY Slimes, Bloomberg, stocks, etc. Why? Are they trying to get more traffic by having Windows users forced to go there? Right click taskbar, "News and interests", brings up a submenu that includes "Turn off".

Someone at Insty made an interesting observation yesterday. In all of our “woke“ institutions, including academia, “‘whiteness’ is treated as a disease that must be eradicated”. Of course, no other racial or ethnic group is treated that way. With everyone else, it’s “celebrate“ your heritage.

In #8 Kosh's Shadow said: Jews are also treated that way I would not say it’s quite the same. I have not seen examples of, for instance, academic curricula exhorting Jews to “be less Jewish”. On the other hand, one could say that Israel-bashing is used as a proxy for channeling the hatred in an “acceptable“ way.

So I just had my first encounter with a gas station that was completely out of gas. I found another one that still had half its pumps working, fortunately. Saw a bunch of others along the way that were entirely closed. And the response of our wonderful secretary of energy is “let them eat teslas“.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 12: To be fair, the problem is due to a ransomware attack on a pipeline company. Businesses do not pay enough attention to computer security - it costs money, with no visible benefit until something like this happens. I do know of a Massachusetts state agency that was hit; did not pay the ransom - paid a security company instead (and was quite correct that they'd have to rebuild their servers even if they did get the data released paying the ransom, because they could not be sure some backdoor or other malware was not left behind) - and now sends out fake emails to their staff to see who gets caught. If I ran computer security for a company, I'd do exactly that - and if you clicked on the link, you would be taken to a computer security refresher training, that you would have to pass to get your account unlocked.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 14: yes, but the Biden administration‘s official response to this has been incredibly ham-handed. The energy secretary really did say “people should have electric cars” when I asked to comment on the phenomenon of people waiting on long lines to get gas.

Got my first Moderna shot yesterday after work. Today, feels like I have been hit by a Mack truck. Went to work and had to go home because standing was an issue. Helped supervise the Squire with some school but ended up napping for two hours. Luckily my shift tomorrow is later so I have time to work through this. Wife tried to book an appointment for yesterday as well but luckily she couldn't get one.

Reply to PaladinPhil in 16: First shot didn't do much to me; 2nd one did about 4-8 hours later. Got the shot around 11, was feeling tired by 3,had to go to bed by 7:30, but had other side effects and couldn't sleep for an hour. The next day, around 3, started to feel better. That was 2nd shot; first had only minor side effects.

Some moron tweeted that since all Dems have hybrids or EVs it's not a problem, and if the Rethuglicantrumpcultnazis would "get with the program" they'd have nothing to complain about.

Ham-handed? You'd think he'd want to cater to the vegans in his base. Very dense tofu handed.
