I am supposed to have surgery on my foot on Thursday; I will, of course, be under anesthetic. I have an intermittent mucus/post-nasal drip condition, that usually hits for an hour or so in the morning---i.e., when I'd likely be put under---which causes me to choke and gag for a while. I've been treating it with antihistamines, per doctor's instructions, which limits the condition (it used to be much worse), but it is beginning to worry me that this condition might cause me to choke to death while anesthesized---or, if not to death, cause me to at least come up so short of oxygen that I'd emerge with a nice, new foot, but brain-impaired. Consequently, despite my need for the surgery, which was originally supposed to be done last December (the hospital cancelled because of covid-something), I am now thinking of canceling/postponing the surgery. I'd be interested to know if anyone has any thoughts/information on this.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 4: Premature posting. Let's try again. Talk to your doctor. He/she can talk to the anesthesiologist, who will be there throughout the surgery monitoring your oxygen levels. You may not be able to take your antihistamine before surgery (nothing by mouth) but I'm sure you'll be fine.

Biden's Gun Schemes Illustrate the Foolishness of Firearms Regulations Among the foolishness.... Among other tests, the rule would set the maximum length of a pistol at 26 inches (because 27 inches is super-dangerous and concealable). These tests add up to a four-point assessment, ranging from "1 point: Minor Indicator (the weapon could be fired from the shoulder)" to "4 points: Decisive Indicator (the weapon is designed and intended to be fired from the shoulder)" with four points the ultimate sign that a firearm crosses the line into very naughty territory indeed.

If you haven't met with him yet, you probably will before surgery, and you should mention this issue to him then so he's aware.

Reply to JCM in 8: But the "red flag" laws are worse - let's call them "red hat" laws - wear a MAGA hat and you must be about to storm the Capitol, so you lose guns. For people who want to "follow the science", they are missing the fact that all studies show absolutely no correlation between gun control laws and gun crimes. This is, of course, because most people who commit crimes with guns did not obtain the guns legally.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 10: Like so many things, there can be a case made for a "red flag" law. But there must be due process, there must be a real definable threat etc.... But the leftist always go overboard, and destroy a reasonable argument for such "real" case by taking it to the extreme.

Buzz, I concur with the previous speakers. Get the surgery if you need it. Tell your doctor about your breathing condition, make sure the anesthesiologist knows, I’m quite certain that is all in a day’s work for him or her.

In #21 JCM said: Isn't leftism based entirely on logical fallacies? I would say that leftism means an a priori belief in certain positions that necessarily result in things that don't comport to reality and only comport in the mind of leftists. But that's not addressing your question. In the article above, the author seems to believe that any activity that relates to an institution determined to be evil is necessarily tainted with evil. So despite the fact that good actually results from British scientists learning about malaria with their focus on protecting British troops, they cannot disconnect the supposed evil of that mindset from also tainting the science that found the cause of malaria. The idea that any good can come out of something less than perfect (in their minds) is impossible. As several of the commenters noted, the author does not recognize how scientific thinking is separated from the politics around that situation. We've seen repeatedly how any association with something bad, no matter how obscure, means the person in question is deemed to be *-ist, whatever * is. I would say that it isn't just illogical, but it is extremely immature thinking, as if the world is full of cooties and if you get even one cootie, you're out.

Once a jolly pfag-man celebrated his silly dong And chose to do it most publically And he sang as he marched and waved to all his silly dong, "You'll come and march for Gay Pride Month with me." "Marching for Pride Month, marching for Pride Month--- I insist you march for Pride Month with me." And he sang as he marched and exhibited his silly dong, "You'll come and march for Gay Pride Month with me." ---apologies to "Waltzing Matilda"

Reply to vxbush in 30: I think leftists see the world as they think it should be, and have no feedback to correct their view - they're right, and that's it; never mind if all the evidence indicates they are wrong. They wish they can, so they can. The world is a big fairy tale, and anyone who doesn't agree is an ogre, witch, etc.

They wish they can, so they can. The world is a big fairy tale, and anyone who doesn't agree is an ogre, witch, etc. Doesn't that come across as immature, though? They aren't willing to accept correction from any source, reality or man. You could just as easily say they accept no one else as an authority, because they can never be corrected by anyone.
