And on an unrelated note: I think I’m done with Audi. I’ve been a loyal Audi customer and driver since 2002, but the maintenance and repair cost charges are too freaking much. (Why, yes, I brought my car in for scheduled maintenance today, and just got a call detailing a bunch of stuff that needs to be fixed, and how much it will cost, how could you tell?)

Reply to Occasional Reader in 10: Co-worker while back bought a used Mercedes AMG. He thought it was a good deal. Until he got a quote for doing the front brakes. Over $2k. I can do the front brakes on my truck in a couple hours and less than $150 if I turn the rotors. If I'm lazy, I can have my favorite shop do them for around $250. My Sprinter van is price enough but the motor hasn't been touched and the brakes are easy.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 12: I hate taking my car in. I know how to do most of the mechanical work. The new electronics you're tied to somewith the right tools to connect to the computer. I no longer really have the time to do my own work, and I can afford to have it done. Same with home repairs, I can fix anything around the house. Hate paying someone to do it... but having someone come in and do it is just easier sometimes. I did build my own deck last summer, 3 weekends with the boys and saved about $10k in labor. I'm glad I did it last summer, lumber is way up in price.
