Probably will be a disruption in this site in the next few minutes to an hour.

Just try again in 5 minutes if it doesn't work.

I got email from the hosting company that some software they use had a security hole, and my password and the database passwords needed to be changed. (This is different from the user passwords). Once I started changing the database passwords, the site would not work until I completed the process.

Good morning.  So, 48 rule and all that, but it looks like at least there's a decent possibility that had Alec Baldwin spent less time railing against the 2nd Amendment, and more time learning the basics of safe firearms handling, well...

All I can think is "isn't this the plot for hundreds of TV mystery shows?"

Indeed, it sounds like something that would happen in Cabot Cove, the most lethally violent jurisdiction in the entire USA.

Slightly lower morbidity than Oxford.

Missing the reference, I think...

(Although Oxford - the city - actually is a fairly rough town, I understand; sort of the New Haven of the UK, in that respect.)

I was thinking of all the British mysteries based there -- Inspector Morse, Inspector Lewis, Endeavour, etc.

Ah.  I don't really watch those, so wasn't familiar.

My question is, should he be held responsible for this death?  The "average Joe" would be.  I don't think "I didn't think/know it was loaded" is an excepted excuse.  Any person playing around (acting) could not claim this defense.  Even if they were told it was not loaded and following all safety protocols, they would have been expected to check the weapon themselves.  Rules for thee and not for me...again?  Hopefully, he at least had his vaccination and mask on.

It was a "prop" gun. However the rules don't change. Even a prop gun loaded with a blank can be deadly, Ask Brandon Lee. Which is why the rules don't change.

The person holding the gun, and violating the rules is number one. The prop master would be next, how was the firearm loaded at the time?

IMAO

According to this article, seems more likely the prop master

The prop gun that killed a movie cinematographer on an Alec Baldwin film set in New Mexico contained a single live round, a Hollywood union said in a memo to members, according to movie industry trade publications.

"A live single round was accidentally fired on set by the principal actor, hitting both the Director of Photography, Local 600 member Halyna Hutchins, and Director Joel Souza," a local branch of the IATSE union told members in the memo, according to Variety and IndieWire.

I don't know why there would even be live rounds on the set, never mind being loaded.

In the 1934 film "Murder at the Vanities,"  one of the actors says, "Hand me that prop machinegun."  The stagehand says to him, "Careful...the safety's off..." and the actor goes out and pretends to mow down the dancers---one of whom is actually shot, and dies backstage.

Turns out later that the performer who's been shot has been killed by someone else---but this news story does bring that scene to mind.

A distraught Baldwin repeatedly asked why he was given a “hot gun” — a firearm with live ammunition — after his prop weapon discharged on his New Mexico film set Thursday at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Sante Fe.”

If that’s the case, the propmaster screwed up… but so did you, Alec.

Rule no. 1:  Treat every gun as loaded [with live ammo] until YOU, PERSONALLY verify otherwise.

Addendum: IMHO, a gun capable of firing a live round is, by definition, not a “prop gun”.

I have to believe there are protocols in place. Not only the prop master, but a weapons master. Who tracks every weapon and every round, live, blank, dummmy or other on set.

There are scenes where they shoot at each other. And the folks responsible should know what a weapon's state is. And everyone on set aware of what is going on.

A whole of lot of levels of fail. How a live round made it into a gun, how that got handed to Baldwin, why he was pointing it crew and pulling the trigger if it wasn't a part of a scene being filmed... etc.
