Here's a good quote from this article: “The difference between tyranny and democracy is very simple. When the government knows everything about you – that’s tyranny. I know how it is to live in tyranny. When you know everything about your government – that’s democracy.” --Cristian Terheş, member of the European Parliament

Particularly in races were a douchewaffle was unopposed. Heh. So then they need to find Mr. Lesko Brandon and he gets to fill all these positions, right? Right?

Reply to vxbush in 8: In the past I usually just fill in the write in bubble and write "none". I don't know about other areas, but so many positions for go unopposed. I want those people to know that they don't just a rubber stamp from all the voters. This year, I thought we should give Brandon a shot.

A write in ballot gets hand counted. What would make it even sweeter would be if someone legally changed their name to Lesko Brandon so they get the position. Heh.

Oh, I went downtown for to cast my vote Singin' polly-wolly-tician all day The Left has the country by the throat Singin' polly-wolly-tician all day I filled my ballot out and had it scanned Singin' polly-wolly-tician all day But the election will come out as planned Singin' polly-wolly-tician all day Fare thee well, fare the well, fare thee well to li-ber-tay We've traded the Constitution for a feeble substitution Singin' polly-wolly-tician all day...

It's an off-year election here. The only offices I know of that are being voted on are mayor and city council. I've been busy and then I was out of town, so I haven't educated myself on the candidates or the issues. I still have 32 minutes, but I'd rather not vote at all if I can't cast an informed vote. And I'm generally pretty happy with how my city is run, aside from the unnecessary diversity committee, but that doesn't seem to be doing much.

Several years ago, this was printed in the town warrant for the town meeting CITIZEN'S CHECKLIST
To be considered on each vote:
1. Is it necessary? Or is it something that is not really needed or perhaps is already being provided by a private or public group?
2. Can we afford it? Remember, there is no limit to what we would like, but there is a limit to what we can afford.
3. What will it cost ultimately? Many proposals are like icebergs... only a small fraction of the total cost is apparent on the surface.
4. How will it affect basic liberties? If it imposes unreasonable or illegal restraints on your life or that of others, it should be vigorously opposed.
5. Is it in the balanced best interest of all? If it is designed to benefit a small group or special interest, while taking unfair advantage of others, work for its defeat.
6. Is it a "foot in the door" proposition? Comprising a little now may be an oppressive burden later, either in more regulation or more taxes, or a combination of both.
7. Does it place too much power in the hands of one individual or group? Once decisive power is granted to a non-elected public official, a commission or municipal authority, the private citizens lose effective control.
8. Does it recognize the importance of the individual and the minority? This is a cornerstone of our Republic.
9. Is its appeal based on emotional propaganda or facts? The farther a proposition gets away from facts, the more critical one should be.
l0. Does it square with your moral convictions? If so, fight for it. If not, oppose it.

Just by the way, I went and voted today. The GOP did not bother to put up candidates for at least five or six judges---and, I believe, one or two other offices. People want to know how NYC gets stuck with a deBlasio? It is because the Republican Party is not there 90% of the time. Even for major offices, like Mayor, it generally nominates Guaranteed Losers™ for which it does not campaign, in between selling its ballot line to people like Michael Bloomberg for vanity candidacies.
