Reply to Occasional Reader in 1: That looks gross. I'm grateful my cold/omicron variant isn't severe, but it's lasting a lot longer than I expected. I don't think you're supposed to take Dayquil and Nyquil for 11 days straight. I'm trying to space out the doses rather than take the maximum allowed.

Reply to doppelganglander in 2: If you do have COVID, ivermectin works. The problem is getting it unless you are a dog. It is the active ingredient in Heartguard, a medicine that prevents heartworm in dogs.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 7: The review focuses on a new translation - not Whittaker Chambers but just as Red -- that is much closer to the original (which I read some time ago). It's definitely not Disney - far more brutal. The rabbit, for example, sees his son eaten by crows, his wife shot, and ultimately ends up dead in a trap. The hunters are clearly the Nazis; the animals are the Jews and everyone else being persecuted (the author was a Viennese Jew). There is no domesticity - Bambi has his fling with Faline and then runs off enjoying the life of the man about town, so to speak. There is something Nietzschean about the whole thing. The author published a pornographic novel in his youth; some of that carries over into the original Bambi (though not the Disney version where Bambi ends up as a model husband etc.). The reviewer points out the paradox that the whole "nature is better than civilization" trope running through the book was itself closely identified with fascism. He goes further to stress the ways in which much of the modern environmentalist movement has roots in fascism, something glossed over/forgotten. Those roots reveal themselves in the anti-Human totalitarian attitude of environmentalists, something the translator misses completely.

As for cannabis, if I had a source I would give it a try. I just learned today that a coworker's husband was exposed to COVID, so now there is weeping and gnashing of teeth as the coworker waits to get tested. I just sit here silently, do my work, and roll my eyes when they can't see.

Friends don’t cancel friends. Those are very difficult words in this day and age, when politics and COVID have meant many friendships have thrown out. I'll give Glover credit here for being a friend despite differences of opinion.

Reply to vxbush in 24: The whole point of "cancel culture" (I prefer "Woke Inquisition" myself) is to break down interpersonal connections. You are part of the group or not. You are part of the gang, or you are an enemy.

You are part of the group or not. You are part of the gang, or you are an enemy. Better analogy is Wokeism is a cult.

Generally, the Left has become MUCH more fanatic and tribal in these last few years. 2014-ish seems like another country.
