But there do seems to be a "where there's smoke, there's fire" aspect to this story, different indicators coming in from different sources that the Russian casualties have been quite bad, and quite unexpectedly (for the Russians) so.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 5: Remember, "casualties" includes wounded in military reporting. Civilians take it as killed. In that sense, the numbers to still seem inflated, but not as much.

IIRC the historical killed-to-wounded ratio for military casualties is 3:1. So that would square with the "over 4,000 KIA" figure the UK MoD claimed the other day. On the other hand, that's the historical ratio, I think there's been a lot of improvement it that figure in recent decades. Anyway... fog of war, but where there's smoke, there's fire. So it's fog, and smoke. wait... IT'S THE SMOG OF WAR!

As buzz and I (and others) have noted before here, it can be instructive to grit one's teeth and listen to NPR, to see the leading edge of the narrative being floated by the opposition. They are all-in on declaring this whole Ukraine invasion response thing as a brilliantly choreographed piece of diplomatic statesmanship, by 5 dimensional chess-player Biden, and his equally wise second in command, Harris. No. Seriously. They're running with this.

I read earlier this week that while Harris had the chance to be seen showing how she cares about the refugees when she was in the area, they had no video of her meeting and greeting said refugees. That would have been an easy enough thing to put together and make look good that I was surprised it hadn't happened.
