Back when the British ruled India, they were always alert on the Northwest Frontier, guarding the Khyber Pass---in fear, especially, of a Russian incursion attempt. The hostile foreign agents in Kipling's novel Kim are Russian, and the Russian officer in Kipling's short story "The Man Who Was" speaks to his British hosts, while in his cups, about Russian ambitions for invading India. Forward to our modern day; the newspapers and other media are all a-Twitter about the dangers of Russia engaging in "cyber-attacks" to retaliate for the Western-imposed sanctions. We've gone from Khyber to Cyber, but the adversary remains the same.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 33: One of Peter the Great's ambitions was a warm water port. And not on the Black Sea. A true Russian Port in the Med, or the Persian Gulf, or the Indian Ocean. Russia has never given that up. The Mid-East has long been partially a proxy conflict between Russian and The West.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 37: Had the reporter/writer been an honest man, he would have explained that the name of the group the other writers (understandably) thought she was referring to is the "Black Hebrew Israelites," which is close enough to create confusion, and that the group is not merely "antisemitic," but was responsible for two shooting sprees in recent years, both aimed at Jews---one at a gathering at a rabbi's house in Monsey, NY, and one in Jersey City, IIRC. The writer's failure to explain the source of the confusion---understandable similarity of names, the fact (which he quickly slides over) that the two groups have a common source, and that the (recently-) violent group is far better known in the US---was clearly in service to his own anti-conservative agenda.

So far, of all the things I've learned about Benji Brown Jackson, the things that bug me the most are: 1) her praise of the vile Black Hebrew Israelites 2) her attitude towards regulators. Her guiding principle is that regulators can do anything that Congress does not explicitly forbid them to do. In other words, all power to the Executive Branch! The first reveals either an amazing naivete or that she's a flat out racist. This is beyond "good people on both sides." The second is a policy issue. Democrats decided years ago that they could rule by fiat and that Congress would let them. The only thing standing in the way of bureaucratic dictatorship is the courts, and she has clearly sided with the dictators. What's even more disturbing is that on at least one occasion Kavanaugh sided with her on a regulatory case out of populist "get the evil corporations" zeal. The pedo thing is definitely red meat at this moment. Her answer was stupid and (from an IT perspective) amazingly ignorant. But she did have a point. There is a difference between the public perception of the crime and the reality - the scenario she outlined ineptly does have a basis in reality. An attorney I know from California described a case he was involved in where an underage girl took a nude photo of herself and to her boyfriend. On the basis of that, she was charged with producing and distributing child pornography. He said these cases come up regularly. In similar way, a large proportion of "sex offenders" are teenage boys caught parking with their slightly underage girlfriends and then prosecuted by the girl's parents. This is not the Aqualung scenario most people imagine. So, while I think her sentencing patterns are lax, there needs to be latitude in such cases. Perhaps she took too much but the "maximum penalty" standard is dumb too. The CRT thing is a distraction. As to the "I'm not a biologist," that was a very dumb thing to say, but hardly unexpected given what the Wokestapo would have done had she answered the question. Notice how many times the word "dumb" shows up here. The woman does not strike me as very bright.

I set foot in a movie theater last night, for the first time in over two years; which was kind of nice. I saw Dune. Overall, I'd recommend it, as a good piece of sci fi filmmaking. It also doesn't get too "woke", except in 1) turning Liet-Kynes into a woman; and 2) avoiding any reference to Baron Harkonnen being a predatory pedarast (as he is portrayed in the novel, and it's at least hinted at in the 1984 film version). Gosh, I wonder which lobby put the kibosh on that latter point, eh? While it's a good film adaptation of the novel (or part of the novel, this is 'Part 1"), one is reminded that Dune is a rather.... ponderous story. Everything, all the time, is oh so terribly important; with Big Pronouncements about life and the universe and fate being constantly made. And as is the case with so much sci fi, there are some unavoidably silly aspects to the story. For instance: On the one hand, mankind has become so technologically advanced as to have spread throughout, not just the galaxy, but the universe. (Reminder: The universe is really, really big.) On the other hand, wars are decided by sending in ground troops to engage in knife fights.

I have not seen her remarks to be able to tell who she is referring to, but given her connection to a Black student group at Harvard which had at least one Jew-hating speaker, I have a hard time giving her the benefit of the doubt.

We are told the problem is lack of housing, high housing costs. etc.... Shockingly...... Many homeless people decline shelter offers by city of Seattle, new report finds SEATTLE (KOMO) — New data shows that more than half of all homeless people who were offered shelter by the city of Seattle last year did not accept the offers, according to a report by PubliCola. According to the report and data presented during a meeting of the Seattle City Council's Committee on Public Assets & Homelessness last week, the city's Homelessness Outreach and Provider Ecosystem, or HOPE, team referred 1,072 people to a shelter in 2021. But less than half -- 512 people -- accepted the offer and stayed at a shelter for at least one night.

What is Woman? —apologies to Helen Reddy, and “I Am Woman” “What is ‘woman’?” Blackburn asked And Brown Jackson failed the task— Although “woman” is why she’s the nominee, She couldn’t toe the party line When she was asked to define And still stay consistent with biology
Oh, yes! How she tried Transparently to evade Having to declare her side And the ideas in which it trades If she has to, she will say anything Right or wrong Without principle What a “Woman!”
