In #14 Kosh's Shadow said: I don't know why detectives are sometimes called "shamus" Well, the "shammes"---Yiddish for a "beadle"---is the guy who watches over a synagogue. And there's a lot of Yiddish---and, in Hammett particularly, English/Irish/Cockney rhyming slang---incorporated into early-20th-century American fiction.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 13: As I've said before, I appreciate your sentiments, but the problem is that I have absolutely no idea what it is I "know/don't know"; to me, this is merely the currency of everyday discussion, so I've no idea what would be of interest to others, nor what they do not know or might be interested in.

I think you are being too modest. Anyway, thank you for overlooking the obvious voice to text mistakes in my previous posts.

I’m surprised I have not seen one of those “prove you’re not a robot“ tests yet (e.g. for Disqus logon) that goes something like:
Select all images that show: A tortoise laying on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to trun itself over, but it can’t; not without your help.

The Barcalounger Conservatives are yammering again...at WZ, at Insty, at PJM. They're all yammering because it looks like Ketanji Brown Jackson will be confirmed (surprise!). They blame everyone in the world except themselves, while they wallow in their Barcaloungers and expect their Dream Conservative Government to be handed them on a silver platter.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 29: Same as the people in some PJM comments who say they won't vote for Trump because he has some liberal positions. Great. Require absolute perfection but end up with the Dummicraps winning because you stayed home.

So it appears that my sister gave the cleaning lady carte blanche and then lied to me about it. Why am I not surprised?

Reply to lucius septimius in 10: Not one, but two jokes in that link: 1) There are several Raymond Chandler stories where his detective, Philip Marlowe, makes coffee, and he, or someone else---like an inquiring homicide detective---discusses his coffee-making technique. This scene is an obvious reference to those written scenes. 2) There is a phrase that appears in a lot of early "hard-boiled" fiction; "Everything's eggs in the coffee." This is a reference to the now-discarded practice of throwing some eggshells into the coffeepot for the purpose of clarifying the coffee---for some reason, eggshells were (at least supposed to) cause the particulate matter in coffee to precipitate out; "eggs in the coffee" was a synonym for "everything's fine/copacetic."

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 11: there really has to be someway for you to be able to teach the stuff; and monetize that teaching.
I do not know anyone who matches your level of knowledge of early 20th century American popular culture.
