WTF?

Jury finds Marquise Tolbert not guilty in connection to downtown Seattle shooting

What the story does not say is it was a shootout between rival gang members. Tolbert may not have started it, but he has been convicted of multiple felonies, and gun charges and never should have had a gun to "defend" himself with.

I suspect the prosecution mostly threw the case, since going to a sentencing phase would have exposed them as letting this guy off the hook too many times.
