During the few moments when NPR wasn't boring us to death with endless, glacial, blow-by-blow descriptions of every detail of the interminable process of planting Queen Elizabeth, they were breathlessly vaporing over the damage wrought by Hurricane Fiona. One might have thought that, by now, Puerto Rico would have armored its infrastructure against the worst levels of hurricane damage, given that past experience indicates that they will experience one every few years or so. Yet, not only was that not done---they hadn't even finished cleaning up the damage from the last one. This again shows both the general incompetence of the people yakking endlessly about the "need to address the planetary climate," and the utter absurdity of attempting such an exercise in futility. No disaster-proofing can be 100%, of course, but the utter lack of preparedness against recurring, predictable events---indeed, the ongoing history/record of it---shows how silly the suggestion is that the larger "climate" can somehow be subjected to human regulation.

And so once again, the more or less functioning-ish adults at the White House have had to walk back a high profile statement by Biden, without admitting to doing so (re: defending Taiwan).

If stamped sheet-metal commemorative effigies of the late Queen Elizabeth were made, they could be sold as "Tin Lizzies."

I love it when I get equipment from a vendor--who seems to know what he's doing, if a bit slow--and I discover that two of the memory modules in the unit are bad. Great job. Happy Monday, campers.

Interesting coincidence with this thread title. As it happens, in terms of gender identity, I identify as MONDQYW.

Stumblin' Joe was right about one thing: "The pandemic is over." I had dinner with a friend at Georgetown Waterfront last night. It was packed. Of course, at the same time, I still see plenty of my Deep Blue neighbors walking around in open air, wearing masks.

It used to be the case that you only heard about any tropical storm or hurricane if it was approaching the US territories to be a sudden concern. Now, the minute *any* storm looks like it might become Something™️ is breathlessly reported as the Next Doom from Gaia. Heck, I get text alerts from a weather site that I never asked for and I'm still trying to turn those off. Every single tropical storm becomes something to interrupt my day about, it seems.

During the endless Radio Royalty Roundup, one of the announcers was wondering "how long it will take before King Charles' likeness appears on the coinage." I cannot help but think it a shame that the British abandoned their traditional coinage in favor of going metric. If they were still using pounds-shillings-and-pence, it would actually be possible to play chuck-farthing with actual farthings bearing Chuck's likeness.

Heh. From my stint in the UK, I miss the 1 pound coins. They had this satisfying solidity in one's pocket.

Question for the day:
When Senators in ancient Rome had conference calls with their constituents, did they put them on SPQR-phone?

So while eating dinner, I watched part of the movie Thief, which I'd never seen before. It's quite good, if at times a little full of itself.
