Happy Saturday.
So I watched the new All’s Quiet… on Netflix recently. Overall, I’d recommend it, it’s well made, brilliantly photographed, and powerful. I o find some of the director’s departures from the novel odd, though. [PLOT SPOILERS AHEAD]. E.g., having the protagonists joining up in 1917, instead of at the start of the war; and cutting out the scenes of training, and Paul’s alienation when he’s on home leave. And one thing that annoyed me was changing the plot so that Paul is mortally wounded literally in the closing seconds before the Armistice takes hold. That seems rather… Hollywood.

Started going through a bunch of old letters from college that were in my mom's attic. I've decided to throw out the ones from her specifically; others I'm keeping for sentimental reasons. A bunch of people in there I kind of wish I knew where they went.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 1: It has been close to 50 years since I read All Quiet on the Western Front, but IIRC, he did die very close to the armistice taking effect. Maybe not seconds, but close. When armies mixed mustard and gas and relished war. (Firesign)

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 3: IIRC he’s depicted in the novel as being killed some time in October 1918.
In this movie, it’s at like 10:59:45 on 11/11 that he’s mortally wounded. A bit over the top. IIRC.
In other news, my P365 is now clean (in anticipation of a class tomorrow).

Reply to Occasional Reader in 4: "He fell in October 1918, on a day that was quite and still on that whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front. (Im Westen nichts neues). "He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as thought sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; hs face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come."

Or maybe they're the only ones there. I guess he'd be the most handsome guy in the room too then.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 13: well obviously what? You were the only ones in the room, or you were the most handsome guy in the room? Hope you are having a nice time with the prettiest girl in the room. You said "date" but I'm going to guess it's a girl.
