Another reason for where everyone is, the Chinese Red Balloon took them away. (2 so far, another 97 to go) 99 Red Balloons Floating o'er the US they spy Jukebox. Turn the captions on, and they are prophetic - I hope not, but...
The last verse of the song:
Ninety-nine dreams I have had In every one, a red balloon It's all over and I'm standin' pretty In this dust that was a city If I could find a souvenir Just to prove the world was here And here is a red balloon I think of you, and let it go...

“ (who puts a thermostat in the sun?) ”
The same people who put “global warming” temp monitors in heat-trap areas like cities?

Homeless camps aren't a danger to the public. Fire breaks out at Seattle encampment under I-5 Data from the Seattle Fire Department shows last year they responded to 1,538 encampment-related fires. In 2021 that number was 1,446. I-5 is super critical in Seattle. A shut down of I-5 gridlocks the other arterials through town.

Reply to JCM in 8: If we didn't detect the balloon 200 miles out, our air defense system is sorely lacking, and I doubt that it is. Shoot down over the ocean as soon as it enters US territory. Worried about big equipment boxes? Blow them up. Radar guided missile should break them into small enough pieces. Then let the balloon fly off until it bursts.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 11: They claim that the balloon was prevented from sending data. How that was done, they did not say (with very good reason - if they can do it, then don't tell anyone who could figure out a way around it) I think they redireted its traffic to Hunter's laptop, which is safely hidden from the media/

So Verizon Wireless had $193 in charges for two lines that were activated but never worked, and issued $72 in credits. I supposedly will be getting the remaining $121 in a day or two. The acutal service is good; not 5G but 2-3x DSL and not flaky. After 2-3 days the device won't connect computers but a reboot solves that, and the DSL router needed reboots more frequently

Or did the balloon carry tons of COVID-23 spores?

And I am home in DC, after a pretty, smooth flight. But one thing I noticed is that peoples’ matters on commercial flights have deteriorated in these last couple of years. The requirements regarding safely or completely ignored. People were switching on their phones and yammering away as we were on approach to DCA. The woman behind me had turned on her phone to talk to her fucking dog. Ridiculous.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 18: For phones, we've found they don't interfere with the avionics the way was feared (or the way they used to - modern phones are different) As for the rest of it, a general deterioration in politeness. But really, everything needs to be stowed for takeoff and landing for safety.
