So the Nobel Prize in Muddyscene went to the developers of MRNA vaccines, which have been shown to be useless except for making big bucks for Big Pharma. Are all the Nobel Prizes going the the way of the Nobel Pizz or Piece (certainly not Peace) Prize, given to those who at best made no actual contribution to peace, or at worst (I'm looking at you, Obama and Yassir Arafat.) a quite negative contribution?

Reply to Occasional Reader in 4: Yeah, 1915 and 1994 really solved the problem. What does one do with a state that has failed, politically, economically, and socially? The best I can think of is a strongman to impose his will over a long period, clean things up, set up rule of law, liberal democratic systems (in enlightenment definition) then start loosening the reins allowing more freedoms slowly to accustom the people to liberty.

Totally off-topic, but last Friday the rain in NYC was so hard that it seeped through the window frames and started dripping inside the apartment despite the windows being closed. A lot of rot/erosion in and around the frames as a result. The Intended was supposed to go into work for her last day before retirement, but that had to be postponed because all the trains available in this area were not running.

Do any of y'all have any experience/know anything of value about security laminates for car side windows? Pros/cons, recommended brands/dealers?

Reply to Occasional Reader in 8: I don't even know what a "security laminate" does. Is it like an invisibility cloak?

It's a transparent adhesive sheet that attaches over the window glass; think of it as a giant piece of (strong) transparent Scotch tape. This makes the windows more resistant to being shattered by glass-breaker tools, which is what the auto smash-and-grab orcs use. It doesn't make the window by any means impervious to such methods, but changes the smash-through time from, say, 2 seconds to 30. That makes it much riskier for the thieves; and, if you're in the car at the time, gives you time to react. I saw a fair number of cars with window laminates when I lived in Lima, Peru, in the late 90s, since smash-and-grab theft was big. I was able to witness (from a taxi) the effectiveness of them one time; two thieves pulled up on a motorcycle next to a car stopped at a traffic light; one of them struck one of the side windows two or three times with a mallet; but it didn't brake. The light changed, the lady behind the steering wheel just drove away. OTOH, it also makes it more difficult (potentially) for a rescuer to get into the car, in the event of an accident.
