Robert Spencer lays out the justification of Fatah and Hamas for their attack this weekend. Nothing new to those of us who have been following them since the early 2000's, but good to have it documented for all to see. However, there are some inconsistencies in another aspect of the story. Spencer writes: Meanwhile, on Saturday, Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif hailed the beginning of what he called“Operation Al-Aqsa Deluge.” He said that the massacres of that day were just the “first strike,” and that much more was coming. That differs from what I saw yesterday or Monday about Hamas already calling for a ceasefire.

Reply to vxbush in 1: Hamas ceasefire, pause to rearm, rest for next assault. But we all know that.

But we all know that. Yes. So I have to wonder about the mixed messaging, given that the consensus seems to be that Iran is dictating the show and helping the Palestinians organize this.

One surprise for me has been to learn how strict Israel's gun "control" laws actually are (they have now been relaxed... but still, pretty bad).
You'd think that if any country would understand the value of the right to self-defense...

Perhaps, instead, they were concerned about residents who weren't Jewish, such as Arabs, having the chance to become martyrs for the cause--and how many people they could take with them.

Maybe. I'd think those types would have little trouble getting weapons anyway. So once again, it's disarming only the law-abiding.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 7: That shocked me, too. Considering that every able-bodied Israeli serves in the IDF, you'd think they would trust civilians with firearms.

There was a pro-Israel rally in my city last night (we have four synagogues, IIRC, and of course there are many others in Atlanta). The crowd was estimated at 5,000 but it may have been more. I'm so proud of my neighbors. Sandy Springs Pro-Israel Rally
